Petitmont is a French commune with 321 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lunéville and the Canton of Baccarat (until 2015 the Canton of Cirey-sur-Vezouze ).

geography

The municipality is located about 59 kilometers east-southeast of Nancy and 59 kilometers west of Strasbourg in the south of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. Petitmont borders the Bas-Rhin department . Neighboring municipalities are Cirey-sur-Vezouze in the north, Val-et-Châtillon in the north and east, Grandfontaine (in the Bas-Rhin department) in the southeast, Saint-Sauveur in the south and Parux and Harbouey in the west. The community consists of the village of Petitmont, the hamlet of La Montagne and some individual farms. Large parts of the municipality are forested.

history

Little is known about the community. Historically, Petitmont belonged to the province of Trois-Évêchés (Three Bishoprics), which in fact fell to France in 1552. Until the French Revolution , the community was then in the Grand-gouvernement de Lorraine-et-Barrois . From 1793 to 1801 Petitmont was assigned to the Blâmont district and also part of the canton of Cirey. Then from 1801 to 1873 in the canton of Lorquin (1871–1873 Lörchingen). From 1873 to 2015 it again belonged to the canton of Cirey (-sur-Vezouze). From 1801 to 1873 it was also assigned to the Arrondissement of Sarrebourg (1871–1873 Saarburg district). Since then, it has belonged to the Lunéville arrondissement. Until 1871, the community was in the old Meurt (h) e. Then for two years to the Lorraine region . Since then it has been part of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department . According to the Dictionnaire statistique du Département de la Meurthe from 1836, the community in the German-speaking neighborhood was called Klein-Berg . During skirmishes with the Germans in 1914 at the Battle of Morhangen, 53 members of the 121st Infantry Regiment died in battles in Petitmont.
