economy

The soils in the vicinity of Froville are unsuitable for growing grain - so life in the small community is largely characterized by pasture, dairy and cattle farming.

history

Nothing is known about the history of the small town. However, it is likely to have developed over the centuries around the Benedictine priory founded in 1080, a branch of the Cluny Abbey .

Attractions

  • The three-aisled nave of the priory church in Froville was built shortly after the priory was founded, i.e. towards the end of the 11th century. The mighty brick pillars and pillars of the unadorned interior end in extremely simple striker plates or cube capitals . The broad central nave was never vaulted, but always had a flat ceiling or an open roof structure; In the side aisles, however, there are groin vaults . The choir of the church was renewed in the late Gothic style in the 15th century . The former cloister, which was in an extremely desolate condition at the beginning of the 20th century, probably dates from the 13th century; a wealthy American bought three of the four Gothic triple arcades in 1920 and donated them to The Cloisters Museum in New York in 1935 , where they can be seen in the entrance area. The beautiful Gothic stepped portal of the church dates from the same time as the cloister. It was not until 1926 and 1985, respectively, that the monastery and church were recognized as monuments historiques .
  • The Jardin d'Harmonie was created in the former monastery garden , in which contemporary works of art are sometimes exhibited.
  • The castle ( château ) of Froville is only about 50 meters from the church . The three-wing building from the 18th century was redesigned in the 19th century and is privately owned.

Others

  • Every summer a music festival for sacred and baroque music takes place in the former priory church.
  • Froville Church was the location of some of the scenes in the 2011 film Tous les soleils, directed by Philippe Claudel .
