history
Gerbéviller was first mentioned in 1149. At the same time a castle and a city wall were built. Until the end of the century, the place belonged to the appanage of the younger sons of the Châtenois family . 1265 forced Friedrich III. , Duke of Lorraine , the place - simultaneously with Lunéville and Einville - a constitution. Gerbéviller later became the property of the Wisse, Du Châtelet and Tornielle families.
In 1636, during the siege of Moyen , Gerbéviller was burned down. Like most of the castles in Lorraine and France, the castle was destroyed on the orders of Richelieu . The city walls were demolished in 1681 but rebuilt between 1704 and 1707.
1737 inherited Camille de Lambertye from his uncle Anne-Joseph de Tornielle the barony of Gerbéviller, which was raised to a margraviate. Lambertye had Germain Boffrand , who u. a. also built the castle of Lunéville, built the Château de Gerbéviller , one of the most beautiful aristocratic residences in Lorraine.
At the end of August 1914, the advance of the 6th German Army in Gerbéviller met strong resistance. Furious, the Germans then executed civilian residents and burned the village down. The community was then temporarily called "Gerbéviller-la-Martyre".
