Michael Petrovich

Michael Petrowitsch (* 1968 in Spielfeld ) is an Austrian minority rights activist , artist and curator . He was a co-founder and long-time director of the Pavel House .

Life

Petrovich grew up in southern Styria , attended schools in Graz, studied German and Slovenian philology at the University of Graz and graduated in 1996 with a Mag. Phil. from. He became involved as a minority rights activist and since 1993 as managing director of the "Article VII-Kulturverein" in Graz for the Slovenes in Styria. As director and curator of the Pavelhaus , he was responsible for the program and exhibitions of the bilingual cultural center in Laafeld near Bad Radkersburg . He ran the expansion and redesign of the minority museum on the past and present of the Styrian Slovenes in the west wing of the house and edited numerous publications of the Pavelhaus. From 2003 to 2009 he was chairman of IG Kultur Steiermark. From September 2009 he worked in cultural policy for the state councilors Kurt Flecker and Bettina Vollath . He is chairman of the international art and culture association EPeKA-Austria.

In the management of the Universalmuseum Joanneum , Petrowitsch has been developing events and projects on the topics of migration and integration since 2011. As part of the 2012 Capital of Culture year in Maribor , he curated the “Borderline” project, among other things.

In 2013, the pumpkin culture initiative in Wies presented photographic works by Michael Petrowitsch for one year. In March 2014 the Styrian Cultural Initiative showed photographic series by Michael Petrowitsch in the Orpheum in Graz . In May 2014 a personal event followed in the Grottenhof cultural park center. As part of the "Steirischer Herbst" festival in 2016, he curated the exhibition Bratstvo i Jedinstvo - Under the Sign of Deregulation at the Haus der Architektur Graz . In November and December 2016 Michael Petrovich had a personal in the gallery K8 in Maribor. As part of the Styrian cultural initiative in the former Palais Dietrichstein , he curated the exhibition Are you still Alive? Together with Isin Önol . - Voices of Conscience at a Time of Silencing in March 2017. He also curated the exhibition In the long run, the territorial imperative will prevail in September 2017 in the Maribor gallery Epeka . In summer 2018 he curated the show “TRi / E / S / T / E, a few remarks on many identities of a city” in the Graz House of Architecture. In July 2019 he had a personal at the Minoriten cultural center in Graz. In December 2019 he curated the exhibition “shitet toka-Current Notes on Albania” in the Graz House of Architecture .
