Michel Christian Cartatéguy SMA (born October 28, 1951 in Hasparren ) is retired Archbishop of Niamey .

Life

Michel Cartatéguy joined the religious order of the Society of Africa Missions and was ordained a priest on July 1, 1979 . In the same year he was assigned to the Niamey Diocese in Niger . He attended a Hausa language course in Maradi . From 1980 to 1984 he worked as a youth pastor in Niamey. There Cartatéguy was pastor of the newly founded parish of Saint Jean de Yantala in 1984 . In 1986 he moved to Niamey Cathedral as pastor and was responsible for the Caritas of the diocese as a clergyman . From 1989 to 1990 he spent a sabbatical year at the Institut Catholique de Paris . On his return to Niger, he initially took on responsibility for the Church Education Center Center de Formation Chrétienne (CFC) in Niamey, until he was appointed Deputy Vicar General of Bishop Guy Armand Romano in 1995.

Pope John Paul II appointed Cartatéguy on May 18, 1999 auxiliary bishop in Niamey and titular bishop of Aulona . The President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue , Cardinal Francis Arinze , ordained him episcopal on September 26th of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Jean-Marie Untaani Compaoré , Archbishop of Ouagadougou , and Guy Armand Romano CSsR , Bishop of Niamey.

He was appointed Bishop of Niamey on January 25, 2003, and was installed in office on March 2 of the same year. With the elevation to the archbishopric on June 25, 2007 he was appointed Archbishop of Niamey.

On October 11, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his early resignation.
