  • Wieringerwerf (5600 inhabitants), seat of the municipal administration
  • Midden Sea (3100)
  • Slootdorp (1250)
  • Kreileroord (600)

Location and economy

Wieringermeer is located in the northeast of the province, between the former island of Wieringen in the north, the IJsselmeer in the east and Medemblik in the south. The motorway A7 Amsterdam - Hoorn - Afsluitdijk - Leeuwarden crosses the polders. At Middenmeer a trunk road (not a motorway) branches off to Alkmaar and Haarlem . The next train stations are quite far away, namely in Den Helder and Hoorn.

The polder only really started to develop after the Second World War. That's why there are pretty spacious, modern farms here. Agriculture is the most important economic factor in the municipality.

history

The area of the municipality was partly covered with primeval forest, partly boggy, sparsely populated land until the Gau Wiro was partly swallowed up by sea water in 1066. The rest of them suffered the same fate around 1300.

As part of the Zuiderzeewerke ( see where you can read more about drainage ), the polders began to be polded in this water area in the 1920s. On February 10, 1930, two pumping stations in Den Oever (municipality of Wieringen ) and Medemblik were put into operation. The area previously surrounded by a dike fell dry on August 21, 1930. The construction of villages and individual farms soon began. The Jewish Werkdorp , west of Slootdorp, was founded in 1934 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the polder.

On June 1, 1941, the polder, which had been administered by officials from The Hague , officially became a municipality.

Wieringermeer was hit by a disaster during World War II . Against the will of the highest authorities in the German Reich, soldiers of the German occupation forces blew up the sea dyke of the polder on April 17, 1945 ( to make it more difficult for Allied paratroopers to land ). The population had previously been evacuated by the German Wehrmacht. After the dike was blown up, large masses of water penetrated the polder with force and destroyed all houses and streets. Some cattle also perished. Reconstruction began immediately after the liberation on May 5th. By December 11, 1945 the polder was dry again. The north-eastern corner was then forested.

From 1947 Wieringermeer developed into a modern agricultural area. Around 1998 a small piece of the IJsselmeer was diked for a small business area. In 2005, the provincial and municipal authorities, together with neighboring Wieringen , decided to return the northernmost strip of land to water. A water sports and recreational area is to be created in the next few years (Wieringerrandmeer: Wieringer Randsee).
