Modest Cuixart i Tàpies or Modesto Cuixart i Tàpies (born November 2, 1925 in Barcelona , † October 31, 2007 in Palamós ) was a Spanish painter . He was one of the most important representatives of Spanish post-war painting who worked in the style of Abstract Expressionism and Informel .

life and work

Modest Cuixart was a cousin of Antoni Tàpies . He originally studied medicine before attending the Acadèmia Lliure de Pintura in Barcelona and devoting himself exclusively to painting.

Modest Cuixart's painting was originally strongly influenced by Expressionism . His art later developed into abstract painting and experiments in Informel .

In 1948 Cuixart co-founded the artist group Dau al Set , together with Joan Brossa , Joan Ponç , Antoni Tàpies , Arnau Puig and Joan-Josep Tharrats in Barcelona.

Modest Cuixart's art gained international attention in the 1950s. In 1951 he received one of the first prizes at the 1st  São Paulo Biennale and took part in the documenta in Kassel . He has been awarded numerous prizes in Spain, including the St. Jordi Cross , the Order of Isabella the Catholic and the Barcelona Gold Medal .

Modest Cuixart took part in the 1958 Venice Biennale and documenta 2 (1959) in Kassel . Most recently he lived and worked in Girona ( Catalonia , Spain ) and Paris .
