history

The colonization of Monroe began with the arrival of David Smith, a native of Brookhaven on Long Iceland , 1747 under the Cheese Cocks patent a 276 acre (about 110 hectares ) acquired large land on which he had a house built before six years. In 1761 he bought a neighboring property. Both areas together developed into today's village of Monroe.

He built a mill and as a result the settlement was soon named Smith's Mills . The settlement grew and was renamed, first Southfield and then Munroe in 1808. During the presidency of James Monroe, the current spelling finally prevailed.

Residential houses on Stage Road, built in the mid-19th century

The construction of the railroads enabled the Monroe Cheese Company to introduce the Velveeta cheese brand in the United States in 1873 .

In 1892, a large part of what was then the center of the village was destroyed by fire. The disaster was one of the reasons for the incorporation as a village in 1893, because the citizens wanted to build a fire brigade and water supply. A horse racing track was in operation from 1908 to 1927.
