Montebenichi is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Bucine in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany .

geography

The place is located about ten kilometers southwest of the main town Bucine, about 28 km southwest of the provincial capital Arezzo and about 50 km southeast of the regional capital Florence in the Ambratal (Val d'Ambra) at the transition from the Chianti to the Arno valley on a foothill of Monte Luco ( 834  m slm ) and Monte Fenali . The place is located at 508  m slm and had 43 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 28 residents. The river Ambra rises about 5 km northwest and flows about 1 km west of the village to the south.

history

The place originated from a settlement of the Longobards . Until 1385 the place belonged to the Ghibelline family of the Ubertini from Arezzo, then the Ubertini placed the place under the control of Florence. In 1478 the place was besieged, conquered and set on fire by Giovanni della Rovere . The reconstruction of the place did not take place until the early 16th century. In 1527 the castle served as a refuge for political opponents of the Siena government .

  • Santa Brigida (also Santa Maria e Santa Brigida or Madonna del Conforto ), church of the castle, which belongs to the diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro and was under the Pieve of Altaserra in Monte Benichi.
  • Castelletto di Montebenichi , contains parts of the original fastening system. Was restored from 1901 to 1907.
  • Palazzo Stendardi (also Castello di Capitan Goro ), palace of the Condottiere Gregorio Stendardi (also Goro da Montebenichi , 16th century), who was in the service of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere , Francesco Ferrucci and the Medici .
  • Cippo ai Caduti di Montebenichi , memorial in the town center for those who fell in the two world wars, erected in 1978.
  • Santa Maria Assunta in Altaserra , church and pieve about 650 m south of Montebenichi. Was documented in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 12th century. The holy water font was built in 1574, the baptismal font dates from 1596. In the 19th century the facade was renewed.
  • San Francesco , chapel just north of Montebenichi, built in 1605.
