The main artery of road traffic through Monticello is formed by Interstate 94 and the congruent US Highway 52 , the northwestern arterial road of the Twin Cities along the Mississippi. Minnesota State Route 25 crosses in the center of Monticello and crosses the Mississippi over a bridge on the northeastern city limits. All other roads are subordinate routes as well as inner-city connecting roads.

A railway line of the BNSF Railway , the second largest railway company in the country, runs parallel to the I 94 .
