Morten Nicolas Rasmussen (born January 31, 1985 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish football player . He has been under contract with FC Midtjylland since summer 2012 . He is also known by his nickname "Duncan", which he uses as his shirt name.

Club career

Aarhus GF

Born in Copenhagen , he moved to the town of Tilst, ten kilometers from Aarhus , at the age of two , where he began his career in the youth of Tilst ST. There he was discovered by talent scouts from Aarhus GF who then hired him. During his youth at AGF, he was nicknamed " Duncan " by his coach at the time due to his physique style of play and physical presence , a throwback to former Scottish international Duncan Ferguson , who was known for these attributes.

At the age of 17 he made his debut on May 12, 2002 for the first time in the professional team of Aarhus in the 0-1 loss to Lyngby BK . In the follow-up game against Silkeborg IF that AGF won 4-0, he scored his first goal. In the following seasons he steadily increased to a classic "breaker" in the storm center, but without being able to show an adequate goal rate. On the contrary, he was the big goal-getter in the Danish U-17 national team at international level, which fueled the expectations regarding the number of hits in the club.

It was not until the 2005/06 season that he became a top scorer with a series of six goals in five consecutive games. Overall, he came up to the winter in nineteen games on ten goals, which he was unstoppable for Aarhus.

Brøndby IF

For the second half of the season he was then obliged by the Danish top club Brøndby IF to replace Morten Skoubo , who had migrated to Spain to Real Sociedad . Due to the exact same name as the then Brøndby IF defender Morten "Molle" Rasmussen , who was also of the same age , he came up with his nickname " Duncan " as a jersey name and was known for the first time in Denmark under the synonym. When "Molle" Rasmussen left the club in 2008 for AC Horsens , the nickname had already manifested itself in such a way that he kept it on his jersey. In his first half of the year he then completed six season games with one goal before he was injured in March 2006 and was out for the rest of the season. His susceptibility to injuries then dragged through his career at Brøndby.

After he again missed most of the first half of the season due to injury, he then started again an impressive series of 15 goals in 13 games. It was similar in the 2007/08 season, but in which he celebrated his first title with the Danish Cup. In 2008/09 he played a full season for Brøndby IF for the first time , with nine goals this season, however, the season was rather disappointing for him.

In the first half of the 2009/10 season he again fulfilled his own cliché that a weaker half-series was followed by a high-scoring series. As a striker alongside the strong Ousman Jallow and Michael Krohn-Dehli , he came into its own and led the top scorers' list of the Superliga with 12 goals in 15 games until the winter break . This was followed by an offer from the traditional Scottish club Celtic Glasgow , which Brøndby accepted.

Celtic Glasgow

In Scotland, he had to do without his nickname on his jersey, as the namesake Ferguson was a player with a Rangers past, which caused outrage among Celtic fans when he was signed. At Celtic he fell short of expectations for the time being. Fetched as reinforcement for the title fight, he could not fight for a regular place until the end of the season and had to be content with the role of " Joker ". In the end he had 10 league games with only 2 goals. Celtic ended the disappointing season as runner-up behind the Rangers without winning the title.

Loans to Mainz 05, Aalborg BK and Sivasspor

Rasmussen was loaned to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for one year for the 2010/11 season. The Mainz team also had a purchase option until 2014. On August 22, 2010 (1st match day) in the game against VfB Stuttgart , he made his first appearance in the Bundesliga and scored his first Bundesliga goal with the final 2-0 score. In February 2011, the contract with Rasmussen was terminated.

On February 2, 2011 Rasmussen moved to Denmark on loan to Aalborg BK . Although the transfer window had already closed on January 31, 2011, FIFA approved the loan deal between Celtic and Aalborg BK. In September 2011, Rasmussen signed a loan deal with Sivasspor that ran for six months.

FC Midtjylland and return to Aarhus GF

In August 2012, the striker signed a long-term contract with Danish first division club FC Midtjylland . In January 2016 he returned to his first club, Aarhus GF.

National team

For a long time, Rasmussen was considered the most promising striker in his country and was therefore featured in a total of 60 youth international matches between 2001 and 2006, in which he scored 38 goals.

He made his international debut on February 24, 2001 in the U-16 national team in the 1-0 defeat against Sweden.

With the Danish U-17 national team, he took part in the U-17 home European championship in 2002 . Denmark survived the group stage ahead of Finland and the Netherlands in second place, but were then unluckyly eliminated on penalties against Spain. Rasmussen was Denmark's player of the tournament alongside captain William Kvist . Already in the debut game in the 4: 4 against the Netherlands he scored a 1: 1 goal before he scored a total of five times (all goals in the second half) in the second game in the 6: 0 over Finland. Nevertheless, he finished behind Jonathan Soriano , who scored seven times in the course of the tournament, only second place in the scorers list. Between 2001 and 2002 he played 19 times for the Danish U-19s, scoring 17 goals.

With the Danish U-21 national team , he then played his second major tournament, the U-21 European Football Championship in 2006 . However, the ambitious team disappointed in the course of the tournament and was eliminated in the group stage after two draws and one defeat. Rasmussen remained without a goal.

On October 11, 2008 he made his debut in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in a 3-0 game against Malta in the senior team . He came on for Søren Larsen in the 77th minute . This was followed by two more friendlies in 2009. Since his debut he was always the extended circle of the national team and was considered a promising candidate for a place in the squad for the World Cup 2010. On 10 May 2010, he was of national team coach Morten Olsen as one of four players on call are nominated in Denmark's preliminary squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On October 12, he scored his first international goal in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship in a 2-0 win over Cyprus .
