The Mosella is a Latin travelogue in verse form from around 371 by the Roman official and poet Ausonius , who lived in Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ) from 367 to 388 as the tutor of Emperor Gratian .

In 483 ornate hexameters, Ausonius describes an ideal-type journey from the Nahe near Bingen through today's Hunsrück to the valley of the Moselle , which was called Mosella by the Romans . The Mosella is the only surviving ancient poem devoted exclusively to a river.

In the 4th century , Roman emperors resided in Trier, which then belonged to Gaul , which is why many educated members of the upper class stayed in the region. They probably represented the audience that Ausonius had in mind. In the first verses of the Mosella he describes the start of his journey to the "foggy" Nahe and in the following verses names various places where he passes. He mentions the new walling of Bingium , which he called Vincum , which was only built in 368 , the places Dumnissus and the Tabernae travel station in the Hunsrück as well as "Noiomagus" (Noviomagus Treverorum), today's Neumagen-Dhron on the Moselle. In the further course, Ausonius begins with a hymn-like praise of the Moselle. He expressly praises its natural beauty, the hard work of its residents, the charm and fertility of the banks of the Moselle and the surrounding landscape, and also mentions ten tributaries ( Prüm , Nims , Sauer , Kyll , Ruwer , Lieser , Dhron , Salm , Saar and Eltz ). A part of the Mosella is dedicated to the extensive listing of 64 eight-line numbers of 15 fish species that were found in the Moselle during Ausonius' time. Ausonius repeatedly draws comparisons to other places such as his Gallic hometown Burdigala (today's Bordeaux ) or the province of Britain .

A well-preserved manuscript of the text comes from the St. Gallen monastery and was created in the 10th century.
