The stratovolcano Mount Hood located about 70 km east of Portland in the US state of Oregon . At 3,425 m, it is the highest mountain in Oregon and the fourth highest in the Cascade Range . It lies on the border between the counties of Clackamas and Hood River . Mount Hood is the center of the Mount Hood National Forest , large parts of the mountain are designated under the name Mount Hood Wilderness as Wilderness Area , the strictest class of nature reserves in the USA.

The Native American people called the mountain Wy'east . The first European to describe him was William Robert Broughton , a member of George Vancouver's expedition. The mountain is named after the British Admiral Lord Samuel Hood .

The Timberline Lodge , built in 1937, stands on the southern flank of Mount Hood directly above the tree line . The building served, among other things, as a backdrop for the exterior shots of the 1980 film " Shining " by Stanley Kubrick based on the novel by Stephen King of the same name .

Volcanic activity

In the last 15,000 years, Mount Hood has had four eruptive periods. The last phase , known as the Old Maid eruptive period , took place between 1740 and 1810 at the latest . The larger eruptions ended shortly before the arrival of the Lewis and Clark Expeditions in 1805 and 1806, which report that the Sandy River was buried with volcanic material. The last time there were minor steam and ash emissions were 1903. Fumaroles were active for most of the 20th century. Mount Hood is viewed as a potentially active volcano, systematic monitoring began in 1820 , and Mount Hood has also been intensively monitored since the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 . The twelve glaciers on the slopes of the mountain pose a potential threat; lahars can occur in the event of an outbreak .

There are twelve glaciers on the slopes of Mount Hood. These twelve glaciers cover about 80% of the area of ​​the mountain cone; together they contain about 0.35 km³ of ice. The glaciers of Mount Hood reach down to about 2,100 m. The most famous is the Palmer Glacier , especially since it is part of a well-known ski area. Here is a list of the twelve glaciers:

  • Reid Glacier : Located on the west side; he feeds the Sandy River
  • Sandy Glacier : Located on the west side; it feeds the Muddy Fork , which in turn drains into the Sandy River .
  • White River Glacier : Located on the south side, adjoining Palmer Glacier to the east ; he feeds the White River . Glacier runs occurred in 1926, 1931, 1946, 1949, 1959 and 1968. The bridge of Highway 35 over the White River was regularly destroyed.
  • Zigzag Glacier : Located on the southwest side; it feeds the Zigzag River .
