The municipality of Aucapata is a municipality in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . The archaeological ruins of Iskanwaya, dating from pre-Columbian times, are located here .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Aucapata is one of three municipalities in the province of Muñecas and is located in the eastern part of the province. It borders the Municipio Ayata to the north and west and the Larecaja Province to the southeast and northeast .

The municipality has 48 localities ( localidades ). The administrative center of the municipality is Aucapata with 228 inhabitants in the southern part of the municipality, the largest town is Yánahuaya with 863 inhabitants. ( 2012 census )

The municipality of Aucapata is located at an average altitude of 2500  m east of Lake Titicaca and is part of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with temperatures differing more during the day than during the year.

The mean annual temperature of the region is 16 ° C, the monthly values ​​fluctuate between just under 14 ° C in June / July and just over 17 ° C from October to March (see climate diagram Aucapata).
