The Municipio Charaña is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality Charaña is one of eight municipalities in the province of Pacajes and is located in the southwestern part of the province. It borders in the northwest with the province of José Manuel Pando , in the west with the Republic of Chile , in the southeast and east with the Municipio Calacoto , and in the north with the Municipio Caquiaviri .

The municipality comprises 86 localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is Charaña with 1,177 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) on the western edge of the district.

The municipality Charaña is located at an average altitude of 4100  m south of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.

The Charaña region has a semi-arid climate, as the rainfall for more than six months is insufficient for the vegetation to grow. The mean annual temperature in the Municipio Charaña is 8.3 ° C, the annual precipitation is only 300 mm. The region has a distinct daytime climate, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between just under 5 ° C from June to July and just over 10 ° C from November to January. The monthly precipitation is between less than 10 mm in the months May to October and about 50 mm from December to March.

The literacy rate among those over 19 is 88.3 percent, namely 96.0 percent for men and 80.0 percent for women (2001) .

87.4 percent of the population speak Spanish , 83.9 percent speak Aymara , and 0.5 percent speak Quechua . (2001)

90.3 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 82.2 percent live without sanitary facilities (2001) .

51.7 percent of the total of 846 households have a radio, 8.4 percent a television, 52.8 percent a bicycle, 5.8 percent a motorcycle, 2.5 percent a car, 0.2 percent a refrigerator and 0.7 percent Percent a phone. (2001)
