The Municipio El Alto (more precisely: "El Alto de La Paz") is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The Municipio El Alto is one of five Municipios of the Murillo Province and is located in the western part of the province. It borders the province of Los Andes to the west, the province of Ingavi to the southwest , the municipality of Achocalla to the south , and the municipality of La Paz to the east .

The municipality has 4 separate localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is El Alto with 842,378 inhabitants in the southeastern part of the district.

The municipality of El Alto is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano at an average altitude of 4000  m directly west of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The climate of the region is a typical time of day climate , in which the temperature fluctuations during the day are greater than during the year.

The mean average temperature of the municipality is 9 ° C, the annual precipitation is about 600 mm (see climate diagram). The region has a distinct daytime climate, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 11 ° C in December. the monthly precipitation is between under 10 mm in the months of June and July and over 100 mm in January and February.

95.4 percent of the population speak Spanish , 52.9 percent speak Aymara , and 2.9 percent speak Quechua . (2001)

14.8 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 36.7 percent live without sanitary facilities (2001) .

81.2 percent of the 165,320 households have a radio, 70.5 percent a television, 25.8 percent a bicycle, 0.7 percent a motorcycle, 8.6 percent a car, 10.5 percent a refrigerator, 18.1 percent a telephone. (2001)
