The von Murach family was a Bavarian knight dynasty with possessions in the Upper Palatinate .

origin

The name Murach is identical to the name of Murach Castle near Obermurach . The village of Niedermurach is down in the valley on the Murach River . The first known ancestors of the Murach family are considered to be ministerials of the Counts of Sulzbach and Counts of Ortenburg . The Sulzbachers are said to have built Murach Castle before the 12th century, while the Murachers performed rulership duties on site.

At a tournament in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 942 a "Jungfrau von Murach" was probably present. For the first time historically verifiable is the name of Murach in connection with Berengar von Sulzbach. A "Gerunch de Mourach" was 1110 companion of Berengar I. von Sulzbach .

The family spread early in other regions of the Upper Palatinate and later also beyond.

history

Niedermurach can be regarded as the headquarters of the Muracher family. They were court lords of Niedermurach and also owned a castle there, the remains of which were completely demolished in 1972. In the parish church in Niedermurach, some inscribed stone slabs remind of members of the von Murach family. It is not known when the title of baron was awarded.

Members of the family were carers or judges in Murach, Schwarzenburg , Nabburg , Cham , Lengenfeld and Hirschberg , as well as mine owners in Altfalter. Konrad von Murach was prior of the Schönthal monastery . They were also heir taverns in Bavaria, Bavarian treasurers and knights of the Order of St. George . Franz Christoph Freiherr von Murach was General von Kurtrier and commandant of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Muracher took part in a leading role in the lion war against the Duke of Bavaria Albrecht IV in 1492 .

Women of the von Murach family were abbesses of the Obermünster Canon Church in Regensburg . Juliane von Murach was abbess in Hösbach.

The last male descendant of the family was Karl Freiherr von Murach. He died on September 21, 1836 in Neunburg vorm Wald .
