Hirschberg is a district of the town of Beilngries in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt .

Geographical location

Hirschberg is located northwest of Beilngries above the Altmühltal at around 490 m above sea level . The village spreads west of a mountain tongue dominated by Hirschberg Castle, the Hirschberg, on the high plateau of the Franconian Alb . The so-called Fürstenstrasse, which was laid out by Prince Bishop Raymund Anton Graf von Strasoldo von Kinding , through the Haunstetter Forest towards the castle, runs straight through the village .

history

The development of the place is inextricably linked with the history of the Hirschberg Castle . The name Hirschberg appears for the first time in documents in 1180, when a Chounradus camerarius ( treasurer ) de Hirzperch acts as a witness. It is not clear whether the village or just the castle already existed at that time. The counts who lived in the castle did not call themselves Hirschbergers until 1205. Over the centuries, the spelling of the place name changed: Hyrzberg (1304), Hyrzperch (1306), Hirsperg (1414) or Hirzperkh (15th century). In 1305, the Eichstätter bishop inherited the county, the castle and the village from the last count, Gebhard VII von Hirschberg . The castle became the administrative seat of the prince-bishop's nursing office (later Oberamt) Hirschberg (moved to Beilngries in 1740) and, in the 18th century, the prince-bishop's hunting lodge. Hirschberg is mentioned in the first Salbuch of the nursing office from 1407.

Hirschberg had its own church in the Middle Ages, which was consecrated to St. John the Baptist; it burned down before 1602 and was not rebuilt, as the castle had a sacred space with three altars that the villagers could use as a branch church of Beilngries (1619 high altar consecration ). In 1688 the walls of the burned down village church were still standing. In 1713, today's village chapel was built as a larger path chapel; In 1823 and again in 1846, thought was given to enlarging it and adding a tower and bells. However, this did not happen.

On the Hirschberg there have long been productive vineyards , some of which belonged to the castle, some of which were leased or belonged to private individuals. They were mostly abandoned in the 17th century. In the 15th century, hops were also grown on the Hirschberg .

A description of the property from 1741 shows the economic interdependence of the castle and the village: In addition to several farmers, there were five masons, a blacksmith, carpenter, weaver and carpenter, six day laborers, a box servant who was also a tower guard, and two ox servants who were founded around 1450 , at the foot of the Hirschberg, the prince-bishop's brewery, the castle keeper and the servant.

With the secularization of 1803 Hirschberg came to the Grand Duke of Tuscany , 1806 to the Kingdom of Bavaria , 1817 to the Duke of Leuchtenberg and in 1833 back to Bavaria. In 1967 there was a land consolidation ; In 1983 there were two full-time farms and 13 part-time farms in the village with 289 inhabitants. The independent municipality of Hirschberg only became part of the town of Beilngries after the regional reform on January 1, 1972.
