The museum concept is that literature is not only exhibited, but also visualized and staged. It is a museum that is "unparalleled in North Rhine-Westphalia and that, based on Hans Magnus Enzensberger's " Museum of Modern Poetry ", tells literary history (s) in a timely manner and revives literary worlds that have an impact up to the present day In addition to the modern museum design, this includes numerous and varied literary events : author readings, exhibitions, activities with music and visual arts as well as conferences, for example on the topic of “Topographies of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff ” (2007). The "Kulturgut Haus Nottbeck" has overnight accommodation.

The scientific director of the facility is Walter Gödden , who previously initiated the construction of the museum. In 2012, the museum was awarded the Hartmut Vogel Prize for Literature Mediation from the Working Group on Literary Societies and Memorials (ALG).

Facility

The permanent exhibition shows epoch-making topics, including the Anabaptist Empire in Münster under the heading “Fanaticism and superstition” or “Westphalian Weimar ” at the time of Princess Amalie von Gallitzin . On the upper floor there is a video pavilion , inspired by the reading pavilions of the Baroque era , in which Westphalian authors answer the question “Why do I write?”. In the old vaulted cellar, children can experience the acoustic installation "Castle ghost meets street gang". The library contains reference works, literary magazines, information material about institutions dealing with Westphalian literature, literary societies, literary offices and foundations, as well as an audio library for the Westphalian radio play production. In a “cyber room” visitors can use modern data technology to independently research information on contemporary Westphalian literature in words and images. A special rarity is in the museum's possession, the "Cologne Bible" from 1478/79; it is the first edition of the Bible ever printed in Low German and contains 113 colored woodcuts. The archive contains works from all times, from Werner Rolevinck's “Buch vom Lobe Westfalens” from 1474 to the expressionist literature of Westphalia August Stramm and the Dadaist Karl Riha .
