Musical Academy of the Mannheim National Theater Orchestra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musical Academy of the National Theater Orchestra Mannheim eV is a non-profit association in which the members of the National Theater Orchestra of the National Theater Mannheim are organized. The purpose of the association is to hold concerts, the academy concerts in the Mannheim rose garden . The Musical Academy is thus the organizer of one of the oldest concert series in Germany, which can be traced back to 1778.

For 240 years, the programming and engagement of conductors and soloists have been in the hands of the bodies elected from among the orchestra. Among the theater and symphony orchestras, the academy's democratic structure and its associated programmatic and financial independence are unique. They are decisive for the artistic identity and the self-image of the musicians.

Historical background

Mannheim became the Electoral Palatinate residence in 1720 and experienced a cultural boom , especially from 1743 under Elector Karl Theodor . During this time, the orchestra was fundamentally reformed under Johann Stamitz . From this the famous Mannheim School was founded , which had a great influence on the further development of the concert symphony and orchestral culture in Europe. In 1778 the Bavarian electoral dignity fell to the Palatinate and Elector Karl Theodor moved to Munich. The economic fundamentals no longer existed and so some orchestra musicians stayed behind in Mannheim. The elector issued a decree that the Mannheim theater and orchestra were to be preserved and placed the sponsorship in the hands of the Mannheim citizens. This gave rise to concerts for lovers, from which the "Musical Academies" of the theater orchestra were formed. Even then, anyone could buy or subscribe to an admission ticket.

Since November 8, 1834, the concert series has been known as the "Musical Academy".

organization

Every two years a four-person board is elected from the orchestra, and a six-person artistic advisory board is also elected, which is also a member of the association’s board. In addition to the musicians of the National Theater Orchestra, the academy also accepts sponsoring members. A board of trustees of personalities from business and politics, from the university and colleges as well as from the musical life of Mannheim, accompanies and supports the work of the academy board. The concert series takes place on eight selected dates on Mondays and Tuesdays in the Mozart Hall of the Rosengarten in Mannheim. There are regular special projects, such as the Chamber Academy, a special concert with the Nationaltheater Mannheim (2017) or a concert tour to China (2014).

The Musical Academy is committed to promoting young talent. For example, she cooperates with the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate in the joint orchestra academy LuMa 2020, which endeavors to promote the next generation of string players , and in the nationwide project Rhapsody in School , which aims to introduce schoolchildren to classical music.
