Ali Muslihittin Peykoğlu or Muslih Peykoğlu for short (born October 20, 1905 in Istanbul , † December 27, 1960 there ) was a Turkish football player and official. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as its own generation, he is very strongly associated with this club and viewed by club and fan sites as one of the most important personalities in the club's history. He belonged to the Galatasaray team that dominated Turkish football in the 1920s and won five of eight possible Istanbul championships . Because of his teaching activity at the Galatasaray High School , he is referred to as Hoca Muslih ( Eng . Muslih the teacher or Muslih the mentor ). He began to work as a club official at Galatasaray towards the end of his football career and was made responsible for the division of the club into Galatasaray and Güneş SK due to his leading role in an internal controversy . In the years 1944 to 1946 Peykoğlu acted as the club president of Galatasarays.

society

Peykoğlu attended the renowned Galatasaray High School and played here in the youth department of the traditional Galatasaray Istanbul club - the club that was founded by students from the Galatasaray High School. Word of his footballing talent spread quickly in the Galatasaray community, so that in 1921, at the age of sixteen, he was accepted into the squad of the Galatasaray Istanbul football team. At the time of his entry into the professional squad, Istanbul was under the occupation of the victorious powers due to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War (see Occupation of Istanbul ). After the Turkish teams in the city did not continue a large part of this occupation in league operations, the game operations of the İstanbul Cuma Ligi (German Istanbul Friday League), the most prestigious league in the country at the time, were resumed in the 1920/21 season . Peykoğlu came in the season 22/23 this league in the game of March 9, 1923 against arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul to use and made his professional debut with this game.

With the end of the occupation of Istanbul and the establishment of modern Turkey, football was also reformed in Istanbul. After several Istanbul leagues such as the Friday League and Sunday League existed in parallel in some seasons and competed with one another, the Istanbul Futbol Ligi (German Istanbul Football League ) was introduced in the summer . This league replaced or united all previous Istanbul leagues and ensured that all known Istanbul clubs played in the same league. Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. Peykoğlu took part in this league with his team. For his club he played until the summer of 1934. During this time he was able to win the league championship five times with his club. As a result, his team secured five of the eight possible championship titles and dominated the football of the time.

National team

Peykoğlu began his national team career in 1924 with a use for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Finnish national team . By April 1928, he completed seven more games, scoring a goal.

In addition, Peykoğlu took part with the Turkish selection at the 1928 Summer Olympics.

Functionary career

Peykoğlu was one of the most active personalities of the Galatasaray High School and the associated traditional club Galatasaray Istanbul . After successfully completing high school as a student in 1924 and law school in 1928, he began working as a teacher at Galatasaray High School in addition to his footballing career. In this position he rose to the position of deputy school director. He was also on the club's board in the last few years of his footballing career.

As a club official, he was largely responsible for one of the biggest controversies in the club's history. Since at that time only graduates, students or teachers of the Galatasaray High School were allowed to work in the club as athletes, some other important club members and athletes such as Eşref Şefik , Ulvi Yenal and Yusuf Ziya Öniş demanded that to secure the club's future and maintain dominance within the Turkish sports also allow athletes who have not attended high school. Peykoğlu spoke out against a rule change and also led the group to express his opinion. After Eşref Şefik, one of the most important representatives of the opposing opinion, was also excluded from the club, some club officials and players left Galatasaray and founded the rival club Güneş SK . This split meant that Galatasaray lost important players and did not find their way back to their old strength for a long time. This split, described as one of the greatest crises in the club's history, also meant that Galatasaray remained almost untitled for about two decades and lost its importance within Turkish football. Güneş SK quickly established itself within the Istanbul Football League and also began to play for the championship. In the 1937/38 season Güneş finally won the Istanbul championship, while Galatasaray was only able to get back in the 1948/49 season after 18 years .

In 1944 Peykoğlu was elected president of Galatasarays and remained in office for a two-year term. During this time he made sure that the club, which was in crisis, survived this time almost unscathed.

Until his death he worked in various positions as a club official and was also a member of the Divan Heyeti , a kind of board of directors , until his death .

death

Peykoğlu died on December 27, 1960 in Istanbul of a protracted cancer . He was buried a day later after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Şişli Mosque in the famous Feriköy cemetery .
