İsmet Uluğ (born January 1, 1901 in Istanbul ; † August 26, 1975 there ) was a Turkish football player , official, boxer and doctor . Although he also played for arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul , he is very closely associated with this club through his long stint for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He has been involved in several important successes in Fenerbahçe in particular and Turkish football in general. In 1923 he was part of the Fenerbahçes starting eleven in General Harington Kupası and was in the starting line-up in the first international match for the Turkish national team . During his active time as a football player, he was known by the nickname Yavuz or Yavuz İsmet (German: the rigor or İsmet, the rigor ) because he was awarded a combative and concentrated style of play. With the Turkish national team, Uluğ took part in the 1924 Summer Olympics and 1928 Summer Olympics. From 1961 and 1965 Uluğ was also the club president of Fenerbahçe Istanbul and shaped the club during this time.
Football player career
societies
During his school days at Galatasaray High School , Uluğ began playing club football in the youth team of Galatasaray Istanbul . After the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War on August 2, 1914, all the football players in Galatasaray's first team and the other teams from Istanbul were drafted into military service. So gradually younger and younger players were forced to join the first men's team. Among these players was the young Uluğ. With Galatasaray he should normally have participated in the İstanbul Cuma Ligi (German: Istanbul Friday League), the most prestigious league in the country at the time. This league was the only one that continued to play between 1915 and 1918. But since the Ottoman Empire was one of the losing powers, its capital, Istanbul, was occupied by troops of the British , French and Italians at the end of the First World War . As a result of the war situation and the subsequent occupation of Istanbul , the Cuma Ligi was no longer continued after the summer of 1918. The English groups organized their own clubs and a league. Due to this occupation, almost all local clubs, including Galatasaray, stopped their activities for about two years. Uluğ played for Galatasaray for about a year and during this time only played test and friendly matches, such as. B. against arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul .
In 1919 Uluğ hired the then very popular Altınordu İdman Yurdu club . This association was founded in 1909 in the Istanbul district of Kadıköy , the home district of arch-rival Fenerbahçes, by former members of Galatasaray Istanbul. This club established itself in a very short time as a great rival of Fenerbahçes. For this team, Uluğ completed a few games.
During the occupation, the English and French occupation forces founded their own clubs and also organized several league systems. Except for Fenerbahçe, all other Turkish clubs refused to play in a league with the occupying teams. Fenerbahçe participated very successfully in these leagues and tournaments and won 60 of the 68 games against the occupying teams, drew four times and lost only four games. As a result, the popularity of Fenerbahçe among the local population increased significantly and the games became a reflection of the tense situation within the city. Before one of these 1919 scheduled games against the football team of the English Occupation Army (Turkish İngiliz İşgal Orduları takımı ) the player Kâmil Rona was missing at Fenerbahçe . Since Uluğ was among the spectators and Fenerbahçe did not have a single substitute player, the club official Sait Çelebi became aware of the young Uluğ in his distress and asked him if he would play for Rona. Uluğ agreed and was part of the Fenerbahçe squad from that game on. In this environment, Uluğ took part with Fenerbahçe in the re-introduced Friday League. In his first season after his return, the season 1920/21, he won the championship of the Friday League with Fenerbahçe. After the championship of the 1921/22 season was awarded to arch rivals Galatasaray, Uluğ won the championship of the 1922/23 season with Fenerbahçe. This won championship, in which Fenerbahçe played twelve games, reached the team unbeaten and without a single goal.
Before the end of the occupation of Istanbul, the commander of all occupying forces of Istanbul, General Charles Harington Harington , organized a cup game named after him, General Harington Kupası . For this game, which Harington attached great importance to winning, he personally organized a selection tournament within the occupying teams in which the Irish Guards, Grenadiers Guards and Coldstream Guards participated. After the tournament games, he selected the players he considered suitable from these three teams. In addition, he had four professional football players from the British troops stationed in Egypt and Gibraltar brought to Istanbul especially for this game . From all these football players he had a team set up, which he named Coldstream Guards . He then had an advertisement printed in a daily newspaper that the Coldstream Guards were challenging the Turkish team and that they could compete against them in General Harington Kupası in any combination. Fenerbahçe responded to this newspaper ad by saying that they would only accept the challenge with their own squad. Both teams competed against each other on June 29, 1923 in the Taksim Stadium . Uluğ was one of his team's starting eleven in this historic game. Fenerbahçe won the prestigious game 2-1 and caused great joy among the local population.
With the end of the occupation of Istanbul and the founding of modern Turkey, football was also reformed in Istanbul. After several Istanbul leagues such as the Friday League and Sunday League existed in parallel in some seasons and competed with one another, the Istanbul Futbol Ligi (German Istanbul Football League ) was introduced in the summer . This league replaced or united all previous leagues and ensured that all known Istanbul clubs played in the same league. Uluğ took part with his team in this league from then on and played for Fenerbahçe in this league until the summer of 1929, without being able to win the championship of this league once. Only in the season 1924/25 he did not take part with his club in the competition of this league. In the season 1926/27 he was in the squad, but remained without a game for Fenerbahçe. In the summer, Uluğ took part in the 1928 Olympic Summer Games with the national team and then ended his active football career. The decisive factor at the end of his career was the fact that he completed his medical degree in 1928 and had to do his compulsory service in Anatolia .
National team
Uluğ made his first international appearance in the first game of the Turkish national team . In the game against the Romanian national team , he was in the starting line-up and played for the full season.
With the Turkish national team, Uluğ took part in the Summer Olympics in 1924 and 1928 . He made a total of eleven international matches.
Functionary career
From 1955 he began to work at Fenerbahçe Istanbul as a club official and held various offices. In 1961, Uluğ was elected club president at Fenerbahçe Istanbul . During his tenure, his teams won the Turkish championship in the 1963/64 and 1964/65 seasons of the 1st Lig , the 1st Turkish division .
By 1965, Fenerbahçe opened other sports such as basketball , volleyball , boxing , table tennis and wrestling under his direction . Under his leadership, the club won a total of 19 Turkish championships in various team sports in 1965 and thus experienced one of the most successful seasons in the club's history.
Boxing career
But since the Ottoman Empire was one of the losers, at the end of the First World War, its capital, Istanbul, was occupied by military troops of the British , French and Italians . As a result of the war situation and the subsequent occupation of Istanbul , the different sports were the only way for the local population to assert themselves in prestige. In this environment, Uluğ took part in countless boxing tournaments and attracted attention through his victories against the representatives of the occupying powers.

He died on August 26, 1975. On August 27, after the midday prayer, he was buried in Istanbul's Șişl mosque in the famous Zincirlikuyu cemetery .
