Mustafa Shakir (born August 21, 1976 ) is an American actor . He gained fame mainly through the role of John McIver / Bushmaster from the series Marvel's Luke Cage . As a musician he appears under the stage name Mustafa Effortless.

life and career

Mustafa Shakir was born in North Carolina , USA . When he was 11 months old, the family first moved with him to the Bronx , New York City. When they were seven, they moved to Harlem , Manhattan . Before turning to acting, he worked as a hairdresser. Shakir names the actors Morgan Freeman and Michael Kenneth Williams as role models to devote to acting .

Shakir took his first acting role in front of the camera in 1996 with a guest appearance on the series New York Undercover . In 2000 he played a small role in the movie Shaft - Any Questions? . After guest appearances in Law & Order , Dr. Vegas , Dr. He was House and Wanted in 2005 as Gannon in a central role in the horror film The Cavern . He then made guest appearances in Girlfriends , Cold Case , Numbers , Harry's Law , Shameless , Navy CIS: LA and Underground .

In 2016 Shakir appeared in a supporting role as Victor on the HBO miniseries The Night Of . He also took on one of the leading roles in the drama series Quarry as Moses . In 2017 he appeared in the neo-noir film Brawl in Cell Block 99 as Andre in a supporting role. From 2017 to 2019 he was part of the cast of the series The Deuce . In the second season of the Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage , Shakir took on the antagonist role of John McIver aka Bushmaster in 2018 . Previously, he was already scheduled for the first season in the role of Cottonmouth , which he could not perform due to scheduling reasons. In the final version, the figure was portrayed by Mahershala Ali . He then auditioned for the lead role in the series Black Lightning , which, however , was cast with Cress Williams .

Under the name Mustafa Effortless, he released an EP in 2017 called The Love Machine Project . An EP with the title Masterpeace Theater followed in 2019 . Both albums were released on music streaming platforms. Shakir is vegan.
