Myron Romanul
Myron Romanul (born March 21, 1954 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ) is an American pianist and conductor .
Life
He grew up in a family of musicians in Boston . His grandmother was Stella Roman , then a well-known dramatic soprano at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in Milan .
At the age of six he began studying the piano and memorizing orchestral scores. Five years later he made his stage debut as a piano soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the Harry Dubbs Memorial Award . In addition to piano, he studied conducting at the England Conservatory of Music, at the Boston University School of Music and at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood with Seiji Ozawa , Gunther Schuller and Joseph Silverstein . After working as Assistant Music Director with the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Lyric Opera , he became Principal Conductor of the Boston Ballet. 1970–1979 he worked with Arthur Fiedler , who affectionately referred to it as "Dial-A-Concerto". He assisted him in programming and accompanied him and the famous Boston Pops Orchestra on tours as a piano soloist.
In 1985 he moved to Germany, where he initially worked as a conductor and pianist at the Stuttgart State Theater until 1990 . This was followed by permanent engagements at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe , Staatstheater Mainz and at the Aalto-Theater Essen . As a guest conductor, he has worked with numerous orchestras and opera houses, including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC and the Central Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra . Concert tours have taken him to the USA , Italy , Japan , China , Korea , Turkey , Iceland , Norway , Venezuela , Brazil , Romania and Australia . He was also the Artistic Director of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska for 16 years .
His activities as a pianist and harpsichordist include numerous chamber music performances with the Boston Symphony Players and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, among others . He accompanied artists such as Henryk Szeryng , Rudolf Kolisch , Walter Trampler , Joseph Silverstein, Roman Totenberg, Peter Zazofsky , Rafael Hillier, Leslie Parnas , Deborah Sasson and Peter Hofmann . As one of the few cymbalists in the USA, he performed with various orchestras and groups such as Speculum Musicae under the direction of Pierre Boulez and recorded CDs, including the film music for Gorky Park .
Since 2003 he has been a conductor at the National Theater in Munich , where he has directed performances of the Bavarian State Opera and the ballet since 1987 . He also works as Principal Conductor of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and as a guest conductor at His Majesty's Theater in Perth , Australia, and at the Halle Opera House .
