NRW Forum Düsseldorf in May 2017

The NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is an exhibition and event house in the Düsseldorf Ehrenhof with a focus on photography , pop and digital culture. The NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is characterized by an interdisciplinary program that negotiates current social issues in group and solo exhibitions, festivals and workshops.

The museum building is located north of the old town between the Rhine and the Düsseldorf Hofgarten, in the vicinity of the Tonhalle, Kunstpalast, Rheinterrasse and near the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

The NRW Forum Düsseldorf was jointly subsidized by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the state capital Düsseldorf until the end of 2013. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia ended the co-financing on December 31, 2013. Since January 1, 2016, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf has been run in the legal form of a GmbH as an independent institution. The state capital Düsseldorf is the sponsor. Alain Bieber has been the artistic director of the house since April 1, 2015.

Prehistory and foundation

On the occasion of the GeSoLei exhibition, the Ehrenhof area was built according to plans by Wilhelm Kreis in 1926 . After the GeSoLei , the exhibition building for the NRW Forum initially housed the Reich Museum for Social and Economic Studies . It was opened on June 23, 1928 and represented a new type of contemporary museum . Oskar von Miller , the founder of the Deutsches Museum , was involved in his technical, economic and social history exhibition concept . Marta Fraenkel was the managing director of the Reichsmuseum until 1929 .

From December 9, 1951 to the beginning of the 1990s, the State Museum of People and Economy existed here , which, as a technology museum , showed the interplay between people, nature and economy, work and leisure in the course of sociological changes, in particular specific developments within North Rhine-Westphalia. An accessible coal mine in the basement was the main attraction of the house.

Due to the lack of acceptance and the budget crisis in the city of Düsseldorf at the time, this museum was affected by immediate closure and possible sale. In coordination between the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Düsseldorf, a new concept for the house was developed. After a complete renovation, it was reopened on October 9, 1998 as the "NRW Forum Culture and Economy" by the Minister of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ilse Brusis ; the ceremony was accompanied by a keynote speech by the director of the New York Guggenheim Museum , Thomas Krens .

The infrastructure of the house was jointly managed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the state capital Düsseldorf, Messe Düsseldorf , other institutions and Düsseldorf companies through a sponsoring association. All exhibitions of the NRW-Forum were financed exclusively through own income and sponsoring . As a further specialty, for the first time, the exhibition and event management of a public exhibition house will be taken care of by a private operator within the framework of a management contract.

Exit of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia

Urban Art , 2012

In September 2012, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia announced that it would withdraw from funding the forum at the end of 2013 with an annual grant of 750,000 euros and justified this with its contribution to the consolidation of the state budget. The Fair Dusseldorf also ended the promotion. Werner Lippert and Petra Wenzel then announced the end of their work.

To save the forum, the citizens' initiative Rettet das NRW-Forum was founded, which wanted to win the Victoria and Albert Museum in London ( Martin Roth ) as a cooperation partner for the NRW-Forum . However, the city of Düsseldorf shied away from the costs of such a cooperation. An affiliation to the Museum Kunstpalast with a focus on photography was then discussed.

After the municipal elections in 2014, the newly elected Lord Mayor Thomas Geisel described the exit of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as "awkward" and spoke out in favor of a further development of the previous concept (encounter between culture and business, visual arts and design).

After the state of North Rhine-Westphalia withdrew, the building was initially used as an exhibition space for the Quadriennale art festival , the Photo Weekend and a dance fair.

On December 19, 2014, the city of Düsseldorf announced that it had appointed ARTE journalist and curator Alain Bieber as artistic director of the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf as of April 1, 2015 . The cultural institution, of which the state capital is now the sole shareholder, is to be run as an artistically independent house in the future. An expansion of the group of shareholders is conceivable, and annual funds of one million euros would be made available. The contract with Alain Bieber will be extended beyond 2020. In addition, the NRW Forum will be incorporated into the Museum Kunstpalast .

From September 19, 2015 to January 16, 2016, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf presented "Ego Update - the future of digital identity" as the first exhibition under the responsibility of the new director Alain Bieber. It was about selfies , cyborgs and the question of how ideas of identity are changing in the digital age.

From May 25 to 27, 2018, the NRW Forum Düsseldorf organized a META marathon. The participants design the festival themselves, change roles from expert to layman and experiment with the new format - including overnight accommodation on site.

architecture

The building is part of the listed Ehrenhof ensemble, whose architectural origins date back to around 1900. On the occasion of the industrial, commercial and art exhibition that took place in 1902 , the architects Albrecht Bender and Eugen Rückgauer built the art palace around an inner courtyard as the first of the buildings that belong to a group today.

In 1926, the area of the Kunstpalast (today: Museum Kunstpalast ) was expanded by further buildings according to plans by Wilhelm Kreis for the GeSoLei exhibition: The newly created Ehrenhof ensemble now also included a planetarium (later: Rheinhalle ; today: Tonhalle Düsseldorf ), the Rheinterrasse and the Reich Museum for Social and Economic Studies , later the State Museum for People and Economics , which has been the exhibition building of the NRW Forum since 1998.

A strict symmetrical arrangement, archaic-monumental forms and expressionistic brick facades are the characteristics of the building. Simple, formally reduced structural elements should dominate the overall impression - the neo-baroque facade of the Kunstpalast was also adapted to the newly added buildings and encased with a simple, austere clinker brick facade. The severity and structure of the Rhine facade of the NRW Forum echo the Villa Cuno , which Peter Behrens designed from 1909 to 1910.

Alongside the Wilhelm Marx House and the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden, the ensemble is one of the most important designs by Wilhelm Kreis , who succeeded Peter Behrens as director of the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts and transferred its architecture department to the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1920 .

"Temple-like porches" / "temple-like corner pavilions" in the style of neoclassicism characterize both ends of the single-storey building, the motif of which is repeated in the art museum on the one hand and in the base of the Rheinhalle on the other. The building rests on a base that is inclined. The windows above are combined to form horizontal strips with stone cornices.

Orientation and main topics

The NRW-Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft shows changing contextual exhibitions that aim to make the convergence or mutual interpenetration of aesthetic, social and economic phenomena of the time tangible. The exhibition concepts dispense with a distinction between “high” and popular art: Instead, they are dedicated to the progressive merging of the most diverse (pop) cultural areas, such as art. B. applied arts, design, advertising, architecture, photography, video and fashion.

Since its opening in 1998, the NRW Forum has provided the framework for numerous exhibitions and events that dealt with the most varied of art and cultural genres as well as their mutual influence. At the same time, the concept of “framing” is in the foreground: the exhibition concepts aim to break everyday phenomena such as fashion photos or architecture, cars or comics out of their usual context and to place them in a new context of meaning and perspective.

In the first few years, the German Plastics Museum also presented itself in the NRW Forum with a permanent exhibition and themed exhibitions.

Since July 2019, the NRW Forum has also housed a permanent video lounge of the imai foundation , which is dedicated to the collection, restoration and distribution of video and media art. In addition, the "IKS - Institute for Art Documentation and Scenography", which specializes in the production of documentaries and trailers in the field of contemporary art and the development of digital formats, is located in the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf under the direction of Ralph Goertz .
