Local transport in Worms

Worms main station

Local public transport in Worms is primarily served by an omnibus network, which is supplemented by the more regionally oriented rail transport . The central point of connection of the bus lines with each other and with the railway lines is the Worms main station , next to it there is currently another stopping point.

Rail transport

Since the connection to the route network of the Hessian and Palatinate Ludwigsbahn in 1853, Worms has been an important railway junction. Today, only a few long-distance trains stop at Worms main station, but Worms is well connected to long-distance traffic via Mannheim or Mainz . In local traffic, trains also run in all directions in regular intervals. In 1904, the station building of the station replaced the first that had become too small in 1853 according to plans by the architect Fritz Klingholz .

Further planning

RB of the 629 series in Worms main station on the way to Mannheim

In addition to being operated by the regional railways via Monsheim and Alzey to Bingen am Rhein (RB 35), a reactivation of the Zellertalbahn to Kaiserslautern in regular regular service is currently being considered. At the end of December 2012, a financing package of 53 million euros was signed for the renovation and construction of stations for the RheinNeckar S-Bahn in Rhineland-Palatinate on the Mainz – Ludwigshafen line. The Worms-Nord and Worms-West stations initially considered for construction are not to be built. The construction of a station “Worms-Süd” is also conceivable later. The integration of the route into the system of the S-Bahn RheinNeckar is planned for December 2018 . A connection from Mainz via Worms and Mannheim to Heidelberg is planned. From then on, the S-Bahn should run every half hour in the evenings and on weekends.

As a result of the Rhineland-Palatinate-Takt 2015 state project, an additional two-hour regional express line has been running since December 2014 from Mainz via Worms and Ludwigshafen am Rhein to Mannheim, alternating hourly with the regional express Mainz – Worms – Ludwigshafen – Karlsruhe. From Worms there is now an hourly connection in fast regional traffic to Mainz and Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

From 2007 to 2010 extensive construction work was carried out on the tracks and platforms in Worms main station. The platforms in the main train station received new roofs and new digital passenger information systems and the platforms were raised. In addition, all the staircases on the platforms to tracks 1 to 5 to the pedestrian underpass were demolished and replaced with new stairs and lifts suitable for the disabled. In addition, the public toilet facility, which had been discontinued in July 2008, was built in the summer of 2010 at a new location in the station building on tracks 1 and 8. All of this work was completed in spring 2010, which is also intended as preliminary work for the re-establishment of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn on the Mainz – Mannheim line. In addition, the eastern station forecourt was completely redesigned from September 2010 to May 2013. The old bus station was completely demolished and the area that became free was redesigned. Here, handicapped-accessible ramps to the station building, plants and seating were built.
