Naples is a city in Morris County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

Naples is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas.

Naples is located in the northeast of the state of Texas in the southern United States. It is located about midway between the three great lakes Wright Patman Lake , Lake O'the Pines and Lake Bob Sandlin .

Nearby cities include Omaha (3 km southwest), Marietta (9 km southeast), Daingerfield (17 km south), Mount Pleasant (15 km west) and Douglassville (26 km east). The next larger city with around 1.2 million inhabitants is Dallas, 180 kilometers to the southwest .

history

The city emerged around 1880 around a station on the newly built St. Louis Southwestern Railway . Most of the residents and traders were from Wheatville , which was about two miles off the railroad line. Originally the new place was called Beldon , but when the post office moved here from Wheatville in 1882, it was renamed Station Beldon to avoid confusion with Belton .

The city's importance grew rapidly. As early as 1884 there was a school district, two churches and two flour mills, and the population was 350. By 1890, a local newspaper called the Beldon Monitor had been created . In 1895 the population decided on the name Naples , which is still valid today . A year later, the place had its own bank, 1200 people lived there. By 1925, the population dropped to below 890, but increased to 1929 to more than 1500. The Great Depression left the city almost collapse, the population dropped to 843. In the 1950s, the local school district with the Omahaer district for was Pewitt Independent School District together placed. After World War II , many residents of the city took on industrial jobs outside the city, especially in Daingerfield or at the Red River Army Depot , which is about 35 kilometers northeast near Texarkana .

The city peaked in population in 1980 with 1908 inhabitants.

From southwest to northeast, the city is traversed by US Highway 67 , which runs for a length of 2,511 kilometers from the Mexican border in Presidio in the west to Sabula in Iowa . In the north of the city it is crossed by Texas State Highway 77 , which in turn is the northern starting point of Texas State Highway 338 in the east of the city , which joins US Highway 259 after eleven kilometers south .

Greater Morris County Airport is located about four kilometers south of Naples .

Demographics

The 2000 census showed a population of 1410 people, spread over 625 households and 366 families. The population density was 119 people per square kilometer. 64.1% of the population were white, 33.8% black and 0.6% Native American. 0.5% were of a different ethnicity , 0.9% had two or more races, and 0.6% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 81 men. The median age was 41 years and the per capita income was almost 23,000 US dollars, with just under 28% of the population living below the poverty line.

By the 2010 census , the population had dropped to 1,378.
