description

Vegetative characteristics

Legbreaker ( Narthecium ossifragum ), inflorescence

Narthecium species grow as perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights of 10 to 50 cm. These geophytes develop creeping rhizomes as persistent organs. The sticky stem is stiff and upright, it continues underground and has a slight tuft of fibers there. The three to six basal leaves are sword-shaped.

Generative characteristics

Are the terminal, loose, on upright, leafy Blütenstandsschäften traubigen inflorescences . The flowers are threefold. The six equally shaped bracts ( tepals ) are largely free and yellow to greenish-yellow. The white stamens are densely hairy, the anthers are linear. Three fruit leaves are a dreikammerigen, Upper permanent ovary grown.

Thin-walled egg-shaped to lanceolate-egg-shaped, three-chamber capsule fruits are formed. The pale yellow, thread-like, ellipsoidal seed is tailed at both ends.

The basic chromosome number is x = 13.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Narthecium has a strongly disjoint area : with three species in Europe , one species in the Middle East , one species in East Asia and three species in North America .

The genus Narthecium was previously classified in the Melanthiaceae or Liliaceae family. The genus Narthecium was first published in 1762 by William Hudson in Flora Anglica . Type species is Narthecium ossifragum (L.) Huds. A synonym for Narthecium Huds. is Abama Adans. The scientific name is derived from the Greek word narthex for rod, this is due to the shape of the inflorescence.

The following eight species are recognized in the World Checklist of Nartheciaceae (Kew):
