The Nasse See is a small lake with no inflow and outflow in the district of Lohne , a district of Fritzlar in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district . Until November 2015 it was designated and protected as a natural monument “Nasser See (Biotope 01.174)”.

Geographical location

It is located about 1 km west of the federal highway 450 from Fritzlar to Wolfhagen and about 1.75 km northwest of the center of Lohne at about 370  m altitude southwest of the summit of the Vorderberg ( 393  m ), the southeastern summit of the wooded basalt cone Lohner Holz. An Economic and hiking trail leads 50 m east over, and a shelter is on the trail about 100 meters southeast of the lake. The Katerklippen , which surrounds the Vorderberg in the southeast, east and northeast, and are designated as natural monuments, are located about 500 m east at 340-350 m above sea level.

Geomorphology and biology

Even in the best of times, the lake, which is only about 40 m × 30 m in size, owes its existence to the geomorphology on the southwest slope of the Vorderberg. The Kluftigkeit of basalt on the Lohner wood caused a fairly rapid seepage of rain , then no running water could make. In areas of higher Tuffanteil precipitation water seeps due to the lack of fracturing less rapidly and where there on the basis of basalt deposit on sediments of sand , silt and locally even sound having a comparatively low permeability true, it comes at a low overburden coverage for the formation of waterlogging that when Swamp or as manifested here as a lake.

The lake and the surrounding wetland serve as breeding and spawning waters for amphibians and dragonflies and indirectly as a food source for birds. For these reasons, the lake was designated and protected by the Schwalm-Eder district as extensive natural monument no. 634.106 until November 2015 , and belonged to the 04.440 biotope "Ponds and quarry forests in Lohner Holz".

Basalt mining threatens the natural monument

Today the eastern edge of a large basalt quarry runs around 150 m west of the lake , the Fritzlar-Lohne open-cast basalt mine , which currently extends 800 m south-west of the lake in a north-south direction and up to 200 m in an east-west direction . The operator is Stormarnwerk Frielendorf GmbH & Co. KG, which is planning a considerable expansion of the mining area to the north and east. Since the lake is within the planned dismantling phase 5, the company applied for an exemption from the ban on the removal of the natural monument "Nasser See (Biotope 01.174)" and received approval from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Schwalm-Eder district on November 13, 2015 .

The reason given is, among other things, that in the deepest area of the quarry (approx. 324 m above sea level after backfilling) a permanent water-bearing lake will probably form, which will functionally compensate for the loss of the "wet lake" before it disappears in phase 5 . The damming effect of the rock under the basalt in the bottom of the opencast mine can already be observed today, where - depending on the season and precipitation - open water surfaces form, which have to be pumped out for operational reasons.
