The Somali Premier League is the top division in men's football of the Somali Football Federation , the national football association of Somalia .

history

In Italian Somaliland there were football championships between 1932/33 and 1939/40, in which clubs of Italian colonists took part. The first domestic clubs were founded in the 1940s. The soccer championships continued in the Italian trust territory of Somalia . After Somalia's independence, a national football championship was held regularly from 1967.

The 2004 soccer championship was interrupted a few weeks after the start and only continued from August 2006. The league, called in the 2000's First Division , was renamed the Somali Premier League in 2018 . Ten teams are currently playing against each other in a round-robin tournament with a return game. The club with the best points at the end of the season is Somali football champions, the two worst-placed teams are relegated to the second division . In recent years the season started in December and ended in July or August of the following year. The 2018 season, however, only began in January.

The Somali Football Association is currently not nominating a representative from the league for the CAF Champions League . The last time a Somali team took part in this competition in 1991. The Somali football champions qualify for the CECAFA Club Cup . The greatest success in this competition was Horseed FC's second place in 1977.
