The 1996/97 season was the 75th season of the Nationale 1A , the highest French ice hockey division . The champions were the Albatros de Brest for the second time in the club's history . The Club des Sports de Megève , Gap Hockey Club and Image Club d'Épinal were relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams played 22 games each in the main round. The six top-ranked teams qualified for the final round, while the remaining six teams played a qualifying round. All six teams in the final round as well as the two first-placed teams in the qualifying round qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. The other four teams in the qualifying round contested a relegation round, the first-placed team secured relegation, while the remaining three teams were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
