The 1978/79 season was the 57th season of the Nationale A , the highest French ice hockey division . The Chamonix Hockey Club became champions for the 30th time in the club's history . CPM Croix was relegated to the second division.
mode
The ten teams played 18 games each in the main round. The six best-placed teams qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The four last placed had to compete in the relegation against the two first placed in the second division. The teams in places 7 and 8 received four and two bonus points for relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
