Neil Baldwin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neil Baldwin (born 1945 or 1946 in Staffordshire ) is a British honorary graduate from Keele University , who comes from Westlands, Staffordshire . He is a registered clown and has also worked for the football club Stoke City , for whose team he once played briefly in a friendly match . His life was filmed in the BBC TV drama " Marvelous " , which aired in 2014.

Life

Baldwin was born to Mary Baldwin in Newcastle-under-Lyme . As a child, he was diagnosed with a learning disability that required speech therapy . At sixteen, he left school to join Sir Robert Fossett Circus, England's oldest circus, for which he performed three seasons as "Nello the Clown". He lived with his mother until a few years before her death in 2003. He is friends with the Archbishop of Canterbury and soccer player Gary Lineker .

Keele University

Since 1960, Baldwin has attended unsolicited and unpaid Keele University, where his mother worked as a cleaning lady to greet the new students.

A football charity match on March 12, 2000 presented his own team (Neil Baldwin Football Club, of which Kevin Keegan was president ) against an all-star team made up of former league players , including Lou Macari , Asa Hartford and Gordon Cowans .

In 1968 the Keele University Student Union awarded him honorary lifelong membership. The proposal received unanimous support. To mark his fiftieth year there, he was honored with a two-day celebration that included a thanksgiving service led by the Bishop of Lichfield and Keele graduate Jonathan Gledhill , and another charity game. He was also awarded honorary membership of the graduates .

In 2013, Baldwin received an honorary doctorate from Keele University, which states that he:

“Has been adopted by the student body as something of a mascot for Keele for the past fifty years ... He has observed and supported subsequent groups of Keele students and stayed in touch with all of them by creating an impressive network of alumni, nationally and international, built up. He serves the students by offering them advice and support, and remains steadfastly proud of and loyal to Keele. In this way he has publicly protected Keele and has expressed his interest in any subject that affects or might affect Keele in his numerous contacts, within Parliament, the numerous heads of Christian denominations, voluntary organizations and business leaders across the country who he visits regularly. "

Stoke City

In the 1990s, Baldwin was by then manager Lou Macari as equipment manager of Stoke City football club set, which describes him as "my best obligation ever" because his humor was particularly good for the morale of the team. In the last five minutes of a 1993 farewell game for Gordon Cowans , Macari had him play as a substitute for Stoke City against Aston Villa . Macari later wrote seven pages about Baldwin in his 2009 autobiography Football My Life , saying that he was "a man with no agenda and there aren't many of those in football".

Marvelous

Baldwin is the subject, and he also appears personally in Marvelous , an acclaimed biographical film in which he is portrayed by Toby Jones, who has received praise from The Guardian for his glorious, very human performance. It first aired on BBC Two and BBC Two HD on September 25, 2014 .

In his review of the show, John Woodhouse said:

“It says everything about Neil that Marvelous was ever made. Because at a time when television is seduced by mindlessness and notoriety, that doesn't sound like a promising suggestion: a drama set in Newcastle [-under-Lyme] about a man who is labeled 'learning disabled' and revealed yourself as so much more? Good luck with it. And yet it is there - Primetime BBC2. "

Awards

The film received the British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) in 2015 for "Best Single Drama" and Gemma Jones received the "Best Supporting Actress" award for her portrayal of Baldwin's mother. Toby Jones was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor for his performance.

Baldwin accepted the Drama Award and gave an acceptance speech during the ceremony at the Theater Royal on Drury Lane .
