Claudio Olinto de Carvalho , called Nené (born February 1, 1942 in Santos , Brazil , † September 3, 2016 in Capoterra , Italy ) was a Brazilian football player , who, however, spent most of his active career in Italy and in the 1969/70 season with the US Cagliari Italian football champion.

Player career

Claudio Olinto de Carvalho was born on February 1, 1942 in Santos . Since his youth he played football at the local Brazilian top club FC Santos , where he was accepted into the first team in 1960. With players like Pelé , Gilmar or Zito , FC Santos had one of the best club teams in the world at the time, as can be seen from the list of titles the club won in the early 1960s. Claudio Olinto de Carvalho, better known by his nickname Nené , played for FC Santos from 1960 to 1963 and was involved in many titles, although mostly in the role of reserve player. At the national level, the Taça Brasil was won three times (1961, 1962, 1963), the State Championship of São Paulo once (1962) and the Torneio Rio-São Paulo also once (1963). With a final victory over Peñarol Montevideo from Uruguay , FC Santos won the Copa Libertadores , South America's most important football competition for club teams, in the 1962 season . Through this success one was entitled to take part in the games for the World Cup. The Santos de Pelé beat the Portuguese winners in the 1961/62 European Cup , Benfica, Lisbon , and won the World Cup with 8: 4 after the return leg . The following year the two international successes were repeated. In the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1963 they defeated the Boca Juniors from Argentina 5-3 on a return leg and were able to win the Copa Libertadores for the second time in a row. A little later the title was defended in the World Cup against AC Milan , but this time it was only achieved with a 1-0 win in the necessary play-off after both finals had ended 4-2 for the home team. Nené himself, however, was not used in any of the four international finals of FC Santos. In total, he completed 54 games for Santos in the league, in which he scored 24 goals.

In the summer of 1963 Nené dared to move to Europe and joined Juventus in the Italian Serie A on. For Juventus, the Brazilian coach made under Paulo Amaral as part of the 1963-64 Serie A total of 28 games in which he scored eleven goals. At the end of the season, however, it was only enough to place five in the league.

After the end of the 1963/64 season, Nené moved to the first division promoted US Cagliari , where he should spend almost the entire time of his career as a result. At that time, the US Cagliari was in a phase of sporting upswing, right in the first season in Serie A, with seventh place, they easily managed to stay up. In the following years the US Cagliari was able to get closer and closer to the upper table regions of Serie A, Serie A 1968/69 they even ended as runner-up, only four points behind Fiorentina . The following year, however, the team of coach Manlio Scopigno scored the big hit. In Serie A, the team around players such as attacker Luigi Riva , midfielder Angelo Domenghini and goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi took first place after the end of all game days with a lead of four points over their first rival Inter Milan . This meant for the first and to this day only time in the club history of the club, which has been renamed Cagliari Calcio since 1970, winning the Italian football championship. After winning the title in 1970, however, things slowly went downhill for the club from Sardinia . 1976 followed only six years after winning the championship of the gang back to the second division, after you could get only nineteen points in the 1975/76 Serie A. After relegation, Claudio Olinto de Carvalho ended his footballing career at the age of 34. He had previously played football for Cagliari Calcio for twelve years, only interrupted by a brief interlude with the Chicago Mustangs in 1967. During those twelve years, the attacker played in 311 league games in which he scored 23 goals. He is a member of the Hall of Fame of Cagliari Calcio and is also the player with the sixth most league games for the club.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career as a football player, Nené became a coach and stayed in his adopted Italian home. As a trainer, he mainly worked in the youth and reserve sector. In these positions, Nené was employed at Fiorentina from 1978 to 1981, at Cagliari Calcio from 1984 to 1988 and at Juventus Turin from 1988 to 1992.

He was also able to book two terms as coach of the first men's teams. In the 1982/83 season Nené coached the third division Paganese Calcio , with whom he was relegated to Serie C2 , which meant the end of the cooperation between coach and club. The commitment to the small Sardinian club Sant'Elena Quartu was not particularly successful and ended again after one season.
