Youngest is a German children's and family series of Gero Erhardt , who as the fifth Christmas series of ZDF in 1983 was broadcast. The first three youngest volumes by the writer Else Ury served as a template . The story revolves around the girl Annemarie, the youngest child of the Braun family of doctors, who is called the baby boy . She grew up with her brothers Hans and Klaus in Berlin during the imperial era shortly before the First World War .

The television series takes place in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century, Dr. Ernst Braun is a respected doctor of the middle class. He and his wife Elsbeth are married in Prussia and raise their children according to the virtues of the imperial era . Annemarie is the youngest of the three children (two sons) and is also the darling of the father, who is described as very caring. The family lives in a large house in Charlottenburg . The baroque castle forms the title motif of the opening credits. There is also the grandma, the nanny Lena and other staff.
Annemarie had a happy childhood with all the advantages of the upper middle class. She owns a lot of dolls and her father lets some things go. For example, she very often uses the swear word " thunderbolt " without scolding . When one day she throws her father's new barometer off the wall, the father lets all the suspects line up, but instead of punishing her, he explains to Annemarie how the instrument works. A holiday stay with their uncle Heinrich and aunt Käthe on a farm in Bavaria is also discussed . Afterwards, her and her brother's rural influence is noticeable, but the upbringing of the stricter mother, Annemarie's, takes off again and good behavior is soon restored. Annemarie only finds a friend in her nanny Lena , who even sleeps in her room. After Annemarie illegally ran out onto the street with other children after her stay in Bavaria and even ran into danger in a simple Berlin backyard, Lena recommends that Annemarie be sent to a kindergarten. After all, there she is the most talented of the children, all of whom come from an upscale family. She is also the best student at school, which makes her father particularly happy. The awarding of the certificate is followed by an introduction to the father, who then particularly praises her.
During her school days, Annemarie developed scarlet fever and traveled to a children's home in Amrum for a cure . There she experiences some adventures between the dangerous mudflats and the kind-hearted manager Mrs. Clarsen , a captain's widow . But during her stay, the First World War broke out and she was able to return to Berlin with great difficulty. The joy of reunion is great there. The outbreak of the World War has a tragic effect on the family: The older brother wants to volunteer for the Navy, while the father is already wearing the field-gray skirt under his doctor's coat.
The story continues in Ury's books and tells almost the whole of Annemarie's life: from her days at university to her studies and marriage to her first great-grandchild.

The series has been released on VHS and DVD. In January and May 2005 a DVD box each with 3 parts of the series was released. In October 2009 there was a new edition of the DVDs as a complete box with all 6 parts.
