Niagara Escarpment AVA (recognized October 11, 2005) is a wine-growing region in New York State . The area is located in the zone of the Niagara layer , which is called Niagara Escarpment in English .

After Prohibition , viticulture found it very difficult to regain its footing, although the first vineyards were planted in the 19th century. Since the 1990s, a total of ten wineries have emerged , which together form the Niagara Wine Trail. Viticulture activity on the Canadian side of the Niagara River , the Niagara Peninsula (→ Viticulture in Canada ) is much more pronounced.

The overall cool wine-growing climate affects the choice of grape varieties . In addition to very hardy and early-ripening French hybrid vines or local new varieties , the choice is increasingly being made for early-ripening European noble grapes to improve the quality of the wines .
