history

In 1859, the German settlers Michael and Rosanna Herman built a house in what is now the village of Nickerson. After the decision to extend the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad in 1870, the railroad company bought the house for $ 500 and used it as a train station from then on. On January 13, 1871, the land around the station was parceled out and the Nickerson settlement established. The post office was opened on April 5, 1871, and in the same year a hotel and a forge were built . In the following time, other operations were established in Nickerson.

In 1883, a school building was built in Nickerson, which replaced the previously used school located west of the city. Services were held at the school until a Methodist church was built in 1889. In 1892 a hotel, the post office and a shop were destroyed by fire and all buildings were immediately rebuilt. In 1906 the newly built Sioux City & Ashland Railroad was put into operation east of Nickerson . In 1910 Nickerson was finally incorporated as the Village .

In 1912 Nickerson was flooded and the bridge over the Elkhorn River was destroyed. Four years later the community received a new school building. In 1923, five buildings in Nickerson were destroyed by fire. In 1939, a fire brigade was established in Nickerson, previously the Freemont fire brigade had to move out in the event of a fire.
