Hannover 96 Eintracht Braunschweig

The Lower Saxony derby usually refers to the meeting of the two Lower Saxony soccer clubs Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig . So far (2017) there have been 147 such derbies, in which Eintracht Braunschweig won 66 times and Hanover 96 54 times; 27 matches ended in a draw. It is one of the most common football derbies in Germany.

backgrounds

Parts of the media also refer to the games of Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig against VfL Wolfsburg and partly also against VfL Osnabrück as "Lower Saxony derby"; this is not felt by many fans and those responsible.

The cities of Hanover and Braunschweig are only about 55 km apart as the crow flies. As with many derbies, the rivalry between the clubs is based on historical-political circumstances as well as the rivalry between the two cities themselves, which was offered a new platform through football. However, the start of the rivalry is controversial. According to Bettina Lenner and Florian Neuhauss, it began in 1692, when the noble family of the Guelphs , which had dominated the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg for centuries, lost its power to the Guelph line ruling in the former Principality of Calenberg , which rose to become Electors of the new Electorate of Hanover . Andreas Accountancy even anticipates a rivalry since 1636, when Hanover by appointing the royal residence of George of Calenberg gained importance. Over time , this was intensified by industrialization, the expansion of the railway network in the region and the general traffic situation , which made Hanover one of the most important transport hubs in Germany. Boris Pistorius, on the other hand, speaks of a rivalry only since 1946, when Hanover became the state capital of the newly created federal state of Lower Saxony . Braunschweig was pushed into the second row of the most important cities in the region, which aroused antipathy towards Hanover, but at the same time could have led to a stronger self-confidence of the Braunschweiger.

history

The beginnings (1905–1963)

The Eintracht Braunschweig was founded in 1895, Hannover 96 as a Hanover football club a year later. The first meeting of the two teams took place in the 1900s. In 1938 and 1954 Hannover 96 won the German championship. The record in the competitive games up to the 1962/63 season reads as follows: 54 wins for Braunschweig, 38 wins for Hanover, 14 draws.

The Bundesliga was founded in 1963: the sporting rivalry was born

After the decision to found a nationwide soccer Bundesliga , three clubs from the Oberliga Nord were allowed to participate in the Bundesliga. Since two northern clubs, Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen, were awarded the contract for the Bundesliga, only one place remained. Since Hannover 96 on the larger stadium, possessed the higher average attendance and better economic conditions and also in the twelve annual ranking of the DFB stood before the Braunschweig Eintracht, the management of Hannover 96 were sure to get the contract for the starting place in the Bundesliga. Nevertheless, on May 6, 1963, Eintracht received the license for the Bundesliga, for which only the final placement in the past season spoke: While Hanover 96 took ninth place, the Braunschweiger came third. The decision met with a lack of understanding in Hanover and provoked major protests. However, the official lawsuit against the licensing was denied. The circumstances surrounding the founding of the Bundesliga are seen in many places as an impetus or at least reinforcement of the rivalry between the clubs and their fans.

Eintracht Braunschweig won the German championship in the 1966/67 season , with the Braunschweiger losing in both duels against Hannover 96. In the feature film 66/67 - Fairplay was yesterday , made in 2009, the protagonists of the Braunschweig championship team are members of the Braunschweig fan and hooligan scene. In the 1972/73 season, both clubs played against relegation from the Bundesliga: In the run-up to the last day of the match, Eintracht Braunschweig ranked one place ahead of Hannover 96, which was on a relegation place, but the Hanoverians won the away game against Wuppertaler SV 4-0 and the Braunschweiger Eintracht lost at home Fortuna Dusseldorf with 1: 2, whereby the Hanoverians overtook the Braunschweig and the Lions were relegated from the Bundesliga.

present

In the recent past the duels between the Hanoverians and the Braunschweig team have been a rarity due to their league membership. In the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons, when Hannover 96 was relegated to the third-class regional league, both clubs played for the championship that allowed promotion relegation until the end of the season; in both seasons Hannover 96 won the championship in the northern relay of the Regionalliga. In 1998 this happened through a victory in the direct point game duel on the penultimate game day. A similar situation also happened in the 2016/17 season, when Hanover was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after 14 years of membership in the Bundesliga and until the last matchday was in a long-distance duel with Eintracht Braunschweig for direct promotion to the Bundesliga. One of the decisive factors was Hanover’s victory in the direct encounter on matchday 29. The last victory of the Braunschweig team in the Lower Saxony derby dates from the 29th matchday of the 2013/14 Bundesliga season. However, the club was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season, while Hannover 96 managed to stay up.

More recently, the clash between the two clubs has been consistently classified by the police as a high-risk game and very extensive security measures are being taken to curb the ever massive rioting by fans on the occasion of the derby.

Further Lower Saxony endorsements

The games of the two aforementioned teams against VfL Wolfsburg are occasionally referred to as Lower Saxony endurance, as VfL Wolfsburg is based in Lower Saxony and has been playing in the Bundesliga since 1997. However, in the perception of the public these games only to a limited extent achieve the character of a "real" derby, since VfL Wolfsburg is not accepted as a "real", traditional football club, especially by the fan scenes of the other two clubs. However, the relegation to the 2017 Bundesliga between Eintracht Braunschweig and VfL Wolfsburg, only 30 km away, was exceptionally explosive.

SV Meppen, who played in the 2nd division for a long time in the 1990s, also fought a few derbies with the Lower Saxony north-west rivals VfL Osnabrück and VfB Oldenburg as well as with the then second-class clubs Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig. Other teams that have participated in Lower Saxony derbies in the 2nd division since the 1970s were Olympia Wilhelmshaven, Göttingen 05, Arminia Hannover, OSV Hannover and TSV Havelse.

useful information

In the run-up to the first leg in Hanover in the 2013/14 Bundesliga season, Braunschweig supporters provoked the Hanoverians with a pig that ran through Hanover city center while wearing a Hanoverian club scarf, while the number “96” was emblazoned on the ribs. Crosses were also hung up in the Braunschweig area, and fans of both clubs initiated vigilante groups in front of their stadiums. In addition, a Braunschweig brewery was the shirt sponsor of Hannover 96 in the 1980s . Fans of Eintracht Braunschweig avoid mentioning the club's name “Hannover 96”, and the number “96” is generally not mentioned, whereby the calculation “95 + 1” is used.
