Live and act

The Pálffy s were among the Hungarian nobility . The Hungarian barony was granted to them in 1581. From 1599 they became Imperial Counts of the HRR .

Pálffy's entered the emperor's military service voluntarily, as Nikolaus distinguished himself from the enemy right from his first assignments. He came to the head of the Pálffy'schen Haidukencorps (later hussar regiments) before 1683 . Due to his achievements in the relief of Vienna and the subsequent campaigns until 1687, he was entrusted with the command of the Esztergom fortress .

In 1688 he was under Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria in front of Belgrade , where he and his riders forced the Turks to leave the first trenches. He is especially mentioned in the battles near Batočina (Patačin) on the Morava and near Nissa (Nisch) . For his behavior in the last-mentioned battle, Pálffy was awarded a "Most High Thank You Letter" by the emperor, whereupon he advanced to field sergeant-general in 1690 and rendered commendable services that year near Belgrade, and in 1691 near Slankamen next Peterwardein . Pálffy's appointments followed in quick succession: in 1692 as Lieutenant Field Marshal and Commander of Kaschau , in 1693 as Chief Treasurer in Hungary, in 1694 as Chief Count and Castle Captain of Pressburg , in 1699 as Feldzeugmeister , in 1700 as a real secret council , in 1701 as Crown Guard and Colonel of the Imperial Foot Guard (Trabantengarde), 1711 Colonel Stable Master of Empress Eleonore and Knight of the Golden Fleece , 1713 Palatine of Hungary, 1718 General Field Marshal.

During this time, too, Pálffy was repeatedly successful in fighting the Turks. He also ensured that the Hungarian troops were appropriately and quickly armed, ensured sufficient supplies in the royal farms and military arsenals and, together with the Cardinal Archbishop of Kalocsa Emerich Count Czáky, initiated the unanimous acceptance of the pragmatic sanction in the Pressburg state parliament session on June 30, 1722 .

Pálffy corresponded confidentially with Prince Eugene of Savoy about the uprising under Rákóczi in 1704. Pálffy, who had been married to Elisabeth, born Freiin von Weichs since 1680 and with her had founded the so-called older Nikolaic line of the Pálffy family, died in Pressburg and was buried in the family crypt in the Franciscan monastery in Malacka .
