The Nister cycle path can be experienced both as a stage tour and in several stages. He mostly uses paved farm and forest roads. About 48 km of the total route are asphalted; the remaining 23 km is a water-bound ground cover . From Willingen it runs steadily downhill, interspersed with smaller climbs and a larger ascent just before Hachenburg. A total of 680  vertical meters of climbs and 1050 vertical meters of descents have to be overcome. In Wissen, the Westerwaldschleife, which circles the Westerwald in three stages, connects to Linz and thus to the Rhine cycle path . The cycle path is suitable for experienced leisure cyclists, only the main ascent from the Nistertal to Hachenburg is sporty and demanding. This section can be bypassed from Unnau-Korb train station using the railway line between Limburg / Westerburg and Au (Sieg) , and bus lines also run between Unnau-Korb and Hachenburg. The period between March and October is particularly suitable for a tour on the Nister cycle path.

Route

Together with the Nister , also known as the Great Nister, the cycle path begins at the western foot of the Fuchskaute . From Willingen you pass bird sanctuaries in the High Westerwald, first in a southerly, then in a south-west direction. The cycle path crosses the course of the Nister several times until Bad Marienberg is reached via a disused railway line . The cycle path leads over Nistertal and Alpenrod in wide loops up to Hachenburg . A descent back into the valley of the Nister follows. Passing the Marienstatt monastery with its basilica, you first turn right, then left the Nister north-west towards Heimborn-Ehrlich . Here the small nest flows into the large nest. In the Kroppacher Switzerland the valley of the Nister condenses. Between Stein-Wingert and Helmeroth , the Nister cycle path leaves the narrow, rock-framed river course. On both sides of the river from Helmeroth to Wissen , where the bike path officially ends.
