A stylistic group of black-figure style amphorae is called the Northampton Group .

With the exception of a single abdominal amphora , the vases of the Northampton Group are all neck amphorae . They are stylistically very close to the North Ionian vase painting . However, they were probably not produced in Ionia , but in Italy , probably in Etruria . They were made around 540 BC. Manufactured. The vases of the group are very high quality products. They show rich ornamental painting and some very interesting pictures, including a prince with horses and crane riders. The Campana Dinoi are stylistically close to them. The clay used corresponds to the Caeretan Hydria originating from Etruria and is not very similar to the composition found in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The group's vessels are named after the Northampton amphora , one of the most famous pieces in the collection of Spencer Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton , who was President of the Royal Society from 1838 to 1848 . He lived in Italy from 1820 to 1830, where he acquired most of his collection of more than 160 vases, including 52 black-figure style amphorae. This period also saw the falls beginning of the excavations in the necropolis of Vulci , from the two, now in the National Antiquities Collections in Munich issued amphorae of the group come from. Lord Northampton helped finance the excavations at Vulci, but it is not known whether the Northampton amphora also came from the necropolis. Eduard Gerhard was the first to describe some of the vases from Lord Northampton's collection during one of his stays in Rome. On his return to England, Northampton set up the vases in his residence, Castle Ashby , and at the beginning of the 20th century they were also shown in exhibitions. In 1980 the collection was auctioned by Christie's auction house on behalf of his heirs . The Northampton amphora achieved a price of 415,360 dollars and was sold to the Greek shipowner Stavros Niarchos .
