O'Mahony or O'Mahoney , Mahony or Mahoney for short , is an Irish family name derived from the Irish name Ó Mathghamhna or Uí Mathgamhna , which is occasionally used in the more modern version O'Mahúna .

history

The Uí Mathgamhna family named after Mathgamhna ruled over Cenél mBéicce and therefore saw themselves as descendants of Bécc († 661), a direct descendant of Áed Ualgarb, who founded the Cenél nÁeda family. Mathgamhna was also a maternal grandson of Brian Boru and was one of those who died in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 . The territory of the Cenél mBéicce corresponded roughly to the later Barony Kinalmeaky in County Cork , about northwest of Bandon . The Uí Mathgamhna were mentioned in the annals of Inisfallen in 1161 .
