The Oberbank AG is a regional bank based in Linz and is one of the 3 banks group .

history

The bank developed in the course of the 17th century from the trading business of the long-established Linz shipmaster family Scheibenpogen . It is therefore possible to speak of a banking house since around 1650. In the 19th century it went to the Eidam (son-in-law) of the former Mayor of Linz Johann Michael Scheibenpogen (II), Josef Planck and was called JM Scheibenpogens Eidam . Josef Planck's descendants, ennobled in 1844, Planck von Planckburg , converted the private bank into a stock corporation in 1869, the " Bank for Upper Austria and Salzburg ".

In the 1930s, the three regional banks " Bank for Upper Austria and Salzburg " (today " Oberbank "), " Bank for Kärnten AG " (today " BKS Bank AG ") and " Bank for Tyrol and Vorarlberg Aktiengesellschaft " (" BTV ") taken over by Creditanstalt (CA) in Vienna. In 1933, the CA obtained a majority in Oberbank by issuing new shares.

In 1952, a third of the CA's share ownership was transferred to the three banks Oberbank, Bank for Carinthia and Styria and Bank for Tyrol and Vorarlberg . Due to the common history and the similar corporate cultures, the originally only capital-based interdependence of Oberbank, BKS and BTV has developed into a close and particularly friendly cooperation, which has been expressed since 1997 in the joint appearance as a " 3-bank group ".

The IPO of Oberbank, BKS and BTV on July 1, 1986 was the most important step in securing independence. A large number of shareholders was the prerequisite for the banks to be able to permanently break free from the influence of the CA and to pursue an independent strategy.

Oberbank International

The freedom of establishment granted to banks in the 1970s enabled Oberbank to expand its catchment area outside of its original Upper Austria / Salzburg region. Since 1985 Oberbank has had its own branches in Upper Austria , Salzburg , Lower Austria , Vienna , Burgenland and in Bad Aussee in the Styrian Salzkammergut . Oberbank has also been active in Bavaria since 1990, in the Czech Republic since 2004 and in Hungary since 2007 . In 2009 the company entered the Slovakian market, and in 2015 the first Hessian branch was opened in Darmstadt and in Erfurt in Thuringia . [obsolete] In addition, branches are to be opened in Baden-Württemberg in 2015 .

Awards

In 2007, Oberbank received the title of “best institute” in the format bank test.

In 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2016 Oberbank received the Recommender Award from the Austrian Finance Marketing Association (FMVÖ). The awards show that Oberbank was recommended particularly often by its own customers.

In 2011, Oberbank was awarded the three-year “berufundfamilie” basic audit certificate, which was extended in September 2014 for a further three years. This audit is awarded to companies that offer measures to improve the balance between work and family.

On February 6, 2013 Oberbank was the only bank in Upper Austria to be awarded the BGF seal of approval 2013–2015. This seal of approval is given to companies that have implemented corporate health promotion in accordance with the criteria of the Austrian network "Corporate Health Promotion". With the award of this seal of approval, the initiatives of the health project “Health Share” were honored. In 2016, Oberbank was awarded the BGF seal of approval for the second time in a row.

criticism

At the end of 2008, Oberbank was criticized for converting Swiss franc loans into euro loans in the wake of the financial crisis (based on an agreement with customers), which led to losses for individual borrowers. Following a reminder from the Association for Consumer Information (VKI), the bank changed its course of action and offered borrowers to switch back to foreign currency loans. This approach was also approved by consumer protection.
