The Upper Feldberg tunnel Deister is as FFH -region Reported and thus protected site in the Lower Saxony region of Hanover . The former mine tunnel is located in the Deister southwest of Wennigsen .

In the Deister, especially in the 19th century, numerous mine tunnels were created to mine the Wealden coal that occurs there. One of them was the Obere Feldberg tunnel on the northern slope of the Feldberg.

The Obere Feldbergstollen is protected by the pond bat because it is used as winter quarters . Other rare species highlighted in the publication of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation are the Bechstein's bat and the great mouse-eared bat .

During a census in June 2013, a light barrier installed in the tunnel was used to register mainly fringed bats and water bats , but also Bechstein's bats, large mouse- eared bats , brown long-eared bats and bearded bats.

More tunnels

The Obere Feldbergstollen is one of several old mine tunnels used as bat quarters in this part of the Deister. The König-Wilhelm-Stollen, protected as a natural monument , is a good two kilometers north-northwest north of the Schleifbach , the Egestorfer Stollen, protected as an architectural monument , about three kilometers northwest in the Stockbach Valley .
