geography

The village is located at the southern foot, on a wavy plateau of the Vogelsberg , in a depression in the direction from NE to SW. The Reichenbach rises above the village and flows through it in a south-westerly direction and flows into the Bracht at Brachttal . The altitude in the district varies from 315 to 460 m above sea level, with the Große Hohberg at 460 m above sea level being the highest elevation. When the weather is clear, you have an outstanding view in all directions from it. The predominant soils are weathered, rubble and rock soils. The most common type of soil is clay.

history

It was first mentioned on March 13, 1372 as Obern Richenbach, by Gottfried Zippur, when he renounced the office of Birsenstein (Birstein) and Richenbach (Oberreichenbach) when Heinrich and Johann von Isenburg released him from captivity. After the Thirty Years War the village was almost deserted. According to ancient traditions, twelve houses formed the community of Oberreichenbach. It took almost 100 years for the number of houses and inhabitants to increase as it was before the Thirty Years War.

In 1859 there were already 263 inhabitants again, divided into 55 families, who in turn were divided into 43 houses. The main occupation at that time was agriculture, which was practiced by the majority of the residents. On March 1, 1971, they joined today's large community of Birstein and thus gave up its independence. At the present time there are still four full-time farms in the village, on which a large part of the agricultural area is divided.

From 1992 to 2002 Oberreichenbach was part of the village renewal program . During this time the old school house was converted into a village house / village community center.
