Mountain name

The name Obir is recorded as Obier in 1637 and can be traced back to the Slovenian word ober - giant , actually Aware . The name "Hochobir" was carried over from the mining area of the same name near the summit to the Obir summit, the Slovenian name Ojstrc means pointed.

In the Carinthian capital, Klagenfurt , Obirstrasse is named after the massif. There is also an Obirstrasse in Völkermarkt and Eberndorf .

Historical

Overburden dumps from former mining (2020)

Numerous tunnels and spoil heaps still bear witness to the earlier lead mining on Obir. You can visit the Obir stalactite cave discovered during mining work . The highest pit near the summit with its miner's house at 2043  m was named Hochobir . Meteorological observations have been made here since 1846 and the Hochobir meteorological station was set up from 1878 to 1880 as one of the first weather stations in the Alps, including an alpine refuge ( Rainer refuge ). In 1891 the station was expanded by the Hannwarte at the Obir summit. Remains of the Rainer refuge can still be found below the summit, which, like the former Hannwarte on the summit, was destroyed in the Second World War.
