At the 5th Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 , a competition in modern pentathlon took place for the first time .
The competition consisted of pistol shooting , 300 meters freestyle swimming and epee fencing as well as a cross-country ride and a cross-country run over 4000 meters.
The first Olympic champion was the Swede Gösta Lilliehöök . The silver medal went to his compatriot Gösta Åsbrink and bronze was also won by a Swede, Georg de Laval .
