The Opel is at 649.3  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Kreuznach . It lies on the border with the Rhein-Hunsrück district in the Soonwald , part of the Hunsrück .

The Opel rises in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park . Its summit lies on the border of the Bad Kreuznach district with the local community Dörrebach to the Rhein-Hunsrück district with the local community Argenthal . It is located 4.5 km southwest of Seibersbach , 4.3 km west of Dörrebach 5.7 km north-northwest of Spabrücken , 4.8 km north of Münchwald , four local communities in the Bad Kreuznach district, and 6.1 km southeast of Argenthal, 5.3 km south of Ellern and 7.7 km south-southwest of Rheinböllen , three local communities in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. The closest cities are Stromberg, about 8 km east in the Bad Kreuznach district, and Simmern / Hunsrück, 11 km north-west in the Rhine-Hunsrück district .

In contrast to the other 600  m high mountains in the Hunsrück, the Opel is not part of a long, high mountain range, but a single elevation that drops more than 100  m in all directions .

Natural allocation

The Opel belongs to the natural space main unit group Hunsrück (No. 24), in the main unit Soonwald (240) and in the sub-unit Großer Soon (240.1) to the natural area Großer Soon (240.11). The landscape falls to the east-northeast into the natural area Guldenbach breakthrough (240.10).

Protected areas

Parts of the Soonwald landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 324698; designated 1980; 273.3564  km² in size) as well as the fauna-flora-habitat areas Soonwald (FFH no. 6011-301; 57.32 km²) and Dörrebach are located on the Opel near Stromberg (FFH no. 6012-303; 1.34 km²). The Im Waldwinkel nature reserve is located on the eastern slope (CDDA No. 81983; 1979; 19.65  ha ).

Wind turbines

In 2012, the construction of five up to 200 m high and thus widely visible wind turbines on the Opel began (see photo). The associated interventions in ecology and landscape include clearing the forest and creating wide access roads for construction and maintenance vehicles that correspond to the size of the facilities.
