The Ellerspring near Winterbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Kreuznach is 657.5  m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation of the Soonwald , part of the Hunsrück low mountain range .

The Ellerspring is located in the northwest of the Bad Kreuznach district, roughly in the center of the Soonwald-Nahe nature park . It rises in the outskirts of the local community Winterbach , whose village church is around 4.6 km south-southeast of the mountain peak. About 1 km north-west of the summit lies in the valley of the first to the southwest flowing Grafe Bach and that of the running at the beginning to the northeast Lametbachs the border to the Rhein-Hunsrück district , in which the local communities Argenthal north, Riesweiler and Tiefenbach northwest and Sargenroth and Mengerschied west of the mountain. About 2 km (as the crow flies ) south-southwest of the summit rises at about 529  m height of the Nahe tributary Ellerbach , after which the mountain takes its name. Somewhat northeast of the summit is the Ödesborner Höhe ( 641.1  m ) with the Holzenkopf ( 604.8  m ) on the other side . A south-southeast mountain spur is the Odstein ( 511  m ) and an eastern one is the Steineberg ( 563.9  m ).

The Ellerspring belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Hunsrück (No. 24), in the main unit Soonwald (240) and in the subunit Großer Soon (240.1) to the natural area of ​​the same name Großer Soon (240.11).

Protected areas

The Ellerspring is located in the Soonwald landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 324698; designated 1980; 272  km² in size) and in the Soonwald fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH no. 6011-301; 57.32 km²). North-east of the mountain in the Graefenbach valley lies the Glashütter Wiesen nature reserve (CDDA no. 163260; 1984; 64  ha ) and to the west of the summit the NSG Landwiesen (CDDA no. 164337; 1994; 1.65 km²).

On the northwest-facing slope of the Ellerspring, there are open, unwooded areas, such as B. Wild meadows, several species of bear moss , including populations of the club moose , the pine moss and occasionally the cypress flat moss .

Telecommunication tower Ellerspring

About 40 m northeast of the Ellerspring summit is the 107 m high telecommunications tower Ellerspring, which was built as type tower FMT 11 in reinforced concrete . The owner is Deutsche Telekom AG . From there, TV and radio stations used to be fed into the cable network . The tower supplied the districts of Bad Kreuznach , Birkenfeld , Mainz-Bingen and Alzey-Worms as well as the Rhein-Hunsrück district and Donnersberg district . Today it only serves as a reserve for TV and radio, but forwards the signal for cable TV via radio relay to the Bad Kreuznach telecommunications tower to supply Bad Kreuznach .

Traffic and walking

State road  108 runs over the southwest high elevations of the wooded Ellerspring between Winterbach in the southeast and Tiefenbach in the northwest. For example , starting at the parking lot near the highest point ( 628.9  m ) of the road, you can take forest paths (such as the Rennweg that runs there ) and -Hike to the mountain summit, to the nearby Alteburg ( 620.5  m ) in the southwest and to the not far away Middle Rhine Valley in the northeast. Since May 9, 2009, the premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig , coming from the south-west from Alteburg, has been a narrow path past the hiking car park through extensive beech forests to the summit of the Ellerspring and from there further north-east to the Schanzerkopf . Approx. The Ellerspring trekking camp is located 500 m southwest of the summit and approx. 200 m northwest of the Soonwaldsteig .
