Oskar Hillebrandt (born March 15, 1943 in Schopfheim ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Oskar Hillebrandt was born in 1943 in Schopfheim, Baden-Württemberg . After successfully completing an apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Recklinghausen , he served in the armed forces . Since the age of 14 he took singing lessons at the Gelsenkirchen Conservatory . In 1965 he was selected from 69 applicants for the Bayreuth Youth Festival Meeting in the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth . He completed his vocal studies at the State University of Music in Cologne with Professor Josef Metternich .

His first engagement was as bass at the Württemberg State Opera in Stuttgart , followed by the Vienna State Opera (debut on October 21, 1991), La Scala in Milan , the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Hamburg State Opera , the Bayreuth Festival , the Bregenz Festival , the Grand Théâtre de Genève , the Carnegie Hall in New York , the Zurich Opera House , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Bolshoi Theater , the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires , the Huju Opera in Shanghai , u. v. a.

Savior at the Vienna State Opera

At the Valkyrie premiere on December 3, 2007 at the Vienna State Opera under director Sven-Eric Bechtolf , the singer of Wotan, Juha Uusitalo , lost his voice in the second act . Director Ioan Holender reached Oskar Hillebrandt on his cell phone at 6.30 p.m., who was just going to pick up a friend at Vienna's Westbahnhof and go out to eat pizza with him. Hillebrandt drove to the opera and after a brief communication with the conductor Franz Welser-Möst , he sang the part standing on a pedestal next to the stage, while Uusitalo acted in silence.
